1§ Nous allons répondre à trois questions [1] :

2§ La résurrection étant un objet de foi, il n'est pas question ici de démontrer par des arguments rationnels sa réalité, mais plutôt de montrer en quoi la résurrection convient aux exigences de la raison humaine [2].

1. Que signifie la résurrection pour vous ?

La résurrection, un acte de puissance de Dieu
3§ Dieu manifeste sa puissance en nous donnant la vie. Il nous a créé à partir d'argile, de la terre mêlée d'eau [3] mais nous sommes plus que de l'argile : Dieu a donné une forme à l'argile, et il y a insufflé un souffle de vie.

4§ Et il manifeste à nouveau sa puissance en nous faisant revivre : à notre mort, nous avions expiré, nous avions rendu le dernier souffle, et Dieu réinsuffle en nous un souffle de vie, mais cette fois-ci de de vie éternelle [4].

5§ Pour moi, ce « réinsuflement » lors de la résurrection nous fait accéder à une autre vie que la vie biologique, matérielle, nous passons dans l'ordre spirituel.

La résurrection, un passage à un autre ordre

6§ Le passage dans l'ordre spirituel est difficile à imaginer. Nous voyons spontanément la résurrection comme la réanimation d'une personne : elle était là, par terre, inerte, on lui fait un massage cardiaque et hop, elle se relève. On reste dans l'ordre du même, dans l'ordre du créé, comme dans la résurrection de Lazare : il retrouve sa vie d'avant, mais c'est pour mourir à nouveau [5].

7§ Or la résurrection dont nous parlons n'est pas de l'ordre du même, elle nous fait entrer dans un monde où l'on ne meurt plus : notre chair ressuscitée ne sera plus le composé organique de carbone, d'hydrogène, d'eau et de calcium de ce monde-ci, elle échappera à la dégradation et à la corruption.
Il ne sera plus nécessaire de tuer pour manger [6] – d'ailleurs comment mettre à mort un animal quand la mort a disparu ?

8§ La résurrection va entraîner un autre changement dans notre dimension corporelle : au ciel, nous disent les évangiles de Matthieu et Luc, on ne se marie plus, on est comme des anges dans le ciel. « Comme » : les évangiles ne disent pas que nous serons des anges, et de fait nous ressusciterons avec notre passé d'êtres dotés d'un corps : notre histoire sur terre comme être sexué nous suivra dans le ciel, où elle sera transfigurée.

9§ La résurrection s'accompagnera d'une spiritualisation de notre chair qui ne sera pas abolie mais amenée à son accomplissement, à sa perfection : gratia naturam non tollitur, sed perficiat dit l'adage scolastique, la grâce – ici de la résurrection – n'abolit pas la nature, mais elle l'amène à son accomplissement, à sa perfection.

10§ La foi chrétienne se tient ici sur une ligne de crête : la résurrection n'est pas la reconduction à l'identique du corps, elle n'est pas non plus son abandon par une âme trop heureuse de se délester d'un poids qui l'alourdissait et l'empêchait de s'envoler vers les prairies célestes des Idées platoniciennes. Le corps ressuscité reste le même tout en ne restant pas identique : ipsum sed non idem pour rester dans les formules latines.

La résurrection, une fête des retrouvailles

11§ Nous retrouvons tous ceux qui nous ont aimés, que nous avons aimés, qui ont compté pour nous : en particulier nos parents, nos ancêtres qui ont lutté pour leur descendance. Nous retrouverons nos enseignants, nos professeurs, tous ceux qui nous ont éduqué à la vie en société. Et nous retrouverons aussi ces êtres spirituels qui ont veillé sur nous, je veux parler de nos anges gardiens.

12§ Nous verrons alors combien nous avons été en dette vis-à-vis d'eux, sans le savoir parfois. Nous nous rendrons compte de tous les gestes, petits et grands, par lesquels des personnes nous ont aidés, sans qu'on s'en rende compte ; nous prendrons conscience de toutes les chaines de solidarité qui nous ont portés, nourris, protégés .

13§ Ce seront des visages, des voix, ceux de nos parents, de nos grands-parents, de nos frères et sœurs ; les visages de nos enseignants, de nos professeurs. Et peut-être aussi les voix des êtres vivants, animaux et poissons, qui ont perdu la vie pour nous nourrir.

14§ Nous prendrons conscience de la dette que nous avons contractée envers eux et envers Dieu, une dette de vie droite et bonne.

La résurrection, une révélation

15§ Lors de la résurrection, nous accèderons à la grande image, à la big picture. Nous verrons d'où venait la petite voix qui refusait de capituler face au spectacle des petits piétinés par les puissants, face à l'arrogance des injustes et des méchants, face à l'absurdité de l'accident, de la maladie, de la mort.
Nous verrons le sens caché des choses, nous verrons qu'aucune larme n'a été versée en vain, qu'aucune prière n'est restée sans réponse, qu'aucun geste d'amour, de pardon, d'affection n'a été perdu, aussi petit soit-il.

16§ Et nous verrons la vérité de nos actes. Le cœur de l'être humain est compliqué et malade, disait déjà le prophète Jérémie dans l'Ancien testament [7].
Nous ne sommes pas toujours au clair sur les motivations profondes de nos actes. Lors de la résurrection, nous verrons le vrai poids d'amour de ce que nous avons fait, de ce que nous aurions voulu faire – et nous verrons aussi le vrai poids du mal que nous avons fait. Les faux-semblants, les mensonges ne seront alors plus possibles.

17§ Et c'est tant mieux : je crois qu'à la résurrection, beaucoup de choses que nous avons faites sur terre seront sauvées. Dieu saura sauver les moments où on a voulu faire du bien sans y arriver, il saura recueillir l'intention bonne, le petit grain d'amour qui s'y trouvait.

18§ Nous n'avons pas su demander pardon à quelqu'un, ou inversement nous n'avons pas su lui pardonner ; ou alors nous n'avons pas su dire à quelqu'un que nous l'aimions. Et ce quelqu'un est parti. Je crois que ces bonnes intentions seront révélées et qu'elles trouveront leur réalisation au ciel. Il y aura un grand pardon, beaucoup de larmes seront versées, des larmes qui purifient le cœur. Le jour de la résurrection sera vraiment une très grande lessive.

19§ Et après ce sera la fête. Une très grande fête. Et Dieu sera là.

2. En quoi est-ce important que les morts ressuscitent ?

20§ La croyance en la résurrection des morts n'était pas évidente déjà au temps de Jésus. Les Pharisiens y croyaient mais pas les Saducéens, c‘est pourquoi ils ont voulu piéger Jésus avec leur histoire de la femme aux sept maris [8].

21§ Je crois que la résurrection est importante, pour que ne soient pas perdues les vies des petits que les puissants ont écrasé sinon physiquement, du moins moralement. Il est important que la justice soit rendue, que le juste soit rétabli dans son droit, que l'injuste soit déclaré comme tel et qu'il se voit retirer ce qu'il a volé. Les larmes et les cris des malheureux ne seront pas restées sans effet, Dieu les aura entendues et il sera venu à leur secours.

22§ Et de même pour les moments heureux d'amour, de joie, de communion : ils ont de la valeur pour Dieu, et il ne les laissera pas se perdre dans la nuit [9]

23§ Avec la résurrection, ce que nous vivons maintenant sur cette terre a de l'importance, ce que nous faisons a de la gravité, du poids. Nous ne sommes pas des nuages sans consistance flottant au gré des vents, nos actions comptent, notre vie compte [10]. A nous de donner du poids à ce que nous faisons.

24§ Et comment donner du poids à nos actes ? En exprimant la bonté que Dieu a mis en nous et autour de nous en nous créant, dans ce que nous faisons et ce que nous ne faisons pas, dans ce que nous disons et ce que ne disons pas, dans ce que nous pensons et ce que nous ne pensons pas.
À nous de protéger ces graines de bonté, de veiller sur leur croissance et de les protéger contre les parasites et le mauvais temps.

25§ Nous avons à cultiver les graines de bonté en nous qui participent de la bonté « naturelle » de la création. Nous avons aussi à cultiver les graines « surnaturelles » reçues au baptême, la foi, l'espérance et l'amour : elles démultiplient nos pensées, nos paroles et nos actes inspirés par la bonté naturelle, plus même, elles les font passer à un ordre supérieur.

26§ Nos actes ici-bas pèsent le poids de l'amour que nous y avons mis, et comme l'amour passera dans l'éternité [11], nous les retrouverons à la résurrection.

3. En quoi est-ce important que le Christ soit ressuscité ?

La résurrection : une confirmation du Fils par le Père
27§ Jésus a affirmé une relation de filiation unique à son Père, qu'il identifiait au Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac et de Jacob, aussi appelé Israël. Les autorités religieuses y ont vu un blasphème passible de mort, mais il a persisté dans sa revendication, ce qui lui a valu la crucifixion. En le ressuscitant, Dieu contredisait ses accusateurs en même temps qu'il confirmait son Fils.

28§ De fait, si Jésus n'était pas ressuscité, cela aurait signifié que sa prétention à parler au nom de Dieu en tant que Fils aurait été fausse, entachant de suspicion tout ce qu'il avait dit et fait sur terre.

29§ Je crois que cela permet d'expliquer le silence de Jésus devant Pilate : Jésus avait dit ce qu'il avait à dire, c'était maintenant à son Père de parler en le ressuscitant, résurrection que Jésus avait prophétisée par trois fois.

30§ La résurrection de Jésus nous garantit que Jésus disait vrai quand il revendiquait d'être le Messie de la fin des temps, l'envoyé plénipotentiaire de Dieu pour établir son Règne, plus même, le Fils unique né de Dieu avant tous les siècles, engendré et non pas créé, « consubstantiel au Père » dit le Credo de Nicée Constantinople.

31§ La résurrection de Jésus nous garantit aussi que Jésus disait vrai quand il affirmait avoir le pouvoir de guérir les hommes de leurs péchés, et plus encore, qu'il avait le pouvoir de les faire entrer dans la vie éternelle [12].

La résurrection : un mystère insondable
32§ Je crois que la résurrection du Christ est un événement d'une ampleur qui nous dépasse infiniment. Il nous est facile de réduire la résurrection de Jésus à celle de Lazare, il nous est plus difficile de percevoir comment elle ébranle la création au plus profond d'elle-même, et encore plus difficile de concevoir ce que même les anges n'avaient imaginé : un corps d'homme glorifié est monté au ciel et se tient au sein même de la Trinité.

33§ Et ce corps glorifié prend une dimension cosmique quand on réalise qu'il est capable de nous entraîner avec lui dans sa montée vers le Père, lui qui est la tête du corps mystique de l'Église.

1§ In this article, we will answer three questions [13] :

2§ As the resurrection is a matter of faith, the aim here is not to demonstrate its reality through rational arguments, but rather to show how the resurrection accords with the demands of human reason [14].

1. What does the Resurrection mean to you ?

The Resurrection : an act of God's power
3§ God manifests his power by giving us life. He created us from clay, earth mixed with water [15], yet we are more than clay : God fashioned us ; he gave form to the clay and breathed the breath of life into it.

4§ And he manifests his power once more by bringing us back to life : when we died, we had breathed our last, we had given up our final breath, and God breathes the breath of life into us once more, but this time it is the breath of eternal life [16].

5§ For me, this ‘breathing back into life' at the resurrection grants us access to a life other than the biological, material one ; we pass into the spiritual realm.

The resurrection : a transition to another realm

6§ And this transition is difficult to imagine. We instinctively view the resurrection as the resuscitation of a person : there they were, lying on the ground, lifeless ; someone performs CPR on them and, hey presto, they get back on their feet. Here, we remain within the realm of the same, within the realm of the created, as in the resurrection of Lazarus : he regains his former life, but only to die again [17].

7§ Yet the resurrection of which we speak does not belong to the realm of the same ; it brings us into a world where we no longer die : our resurrected flesh will no longer be the organic compound of carbon, hydrogen, water and calcium found in this world ; it will escape decay and corruption.
It will no longer be necessary to kill in order to eat [18] – besides, how can one put an animal to death when death itself has vanished ?

8§ The resurrection will bring about another change in our physical nature : in heaven, as the Gospels of Matthew and Luke tell us, people no longer marry ; we are like the angels in heaven. ‘Like' : the Gospels do not say that we shall be angels, and indeed we shall be resurrected with our past as bodily beings : our history on earth as sexual beings will follow us into heaven, where it will be transfigured.

9§ The resurrection will be accompanied by a spiritualisation of our flesh, which will not be abolished but brought to its fulfilment, to its perfection : gratia naturam non tollitur, sed perficiat says the scholastic adage : grace – here, the grace of the resurrection – does not abolish nature, but brings it to its fulfilment, to its perfection.

10§ The Christian faith stands here on a fine line : the resurrection is not the exact restoration of the body, nor is it its abandonment by a soul all too happy to rid itself of a burden that weighed it down and prevented it from soaring towards the celestial meadows of Platonic Ideas. The resurrected body remains the same whilst not being identical to what it was before : ipsum sed non idem to stick with the Latin phrases.

The Resurrection, a celebration of reunion

11§ We are reunited with all those who loved us, whom we loved, and who meant something to us : in particular our parents and our ancestors who fought for their descendants. We shall be reunited with our teachers, our tutors, and all those who have taught us how to live in society. And we shall also be reunited with those spiritual beings who have watched over us—I am referring to our guardian angels.

12§ We shall then realise just how much we have owed them, sometimes without even knowing it. We shall realise all the acts, both small and great, through which people have helped us, without our realising it ; we shall become aware of all the chains of solidarity that have sustained, nourished and protected us ; we shall see all the times when we have caused harm and been forgiven.

13§ They will be faces and voices : those of our parents, our grandparents, our brothers and sisters ; the faces of our teachers and tutors. And perhaps also the voices of living creatures—animals and fish—who gave their lives to feed us.

14§ We shall become aware of the debt we have incurred towards them, and towards God—a debt of a righteous and good life.

The Resurrection, a revelation

15§ At the Resurrection, we shall gain access to the big picture. We shall see where that little voice came from—the one that refused to give in when faced with the sight of the weak being trampled underfoot by the powerful, when faced with the arrogance of the unjust and the wicked, and when faced with the absurdity of accidents, illness and death.
We shall see the hidden meaning of things ; we shall see that no tear was shed in vain, that no prayer went unanswered, that no act of love, forgiveness or affection was lost, however small it may have been.

16§ And we shall see the truth of our actions. ‘The human heart is complicated and diseased,' as the prophet Jeremiah already said in the Old Testament [19].
We are not necessarily clear about the deeper motivations behind our actions. At the Resurrection, we shall see the true measure of love in what we have done, in what we would have wished to do – and we shall also see the true measure of the evil we have done. Pretence and lies will then no longer be possible.

17§ And that is just as well : I believe that at the Resurrection, many of the things we have done on earth will be saved. God will know how to save the moments when we wanted to do good but failed ; he will know how to take account of the good intention, the tiny seed of love that lay within them.

18§ We were unable to ask someone for forgiveness, or conversely, we were unable to forgive them ; or perhaps we were unable to tell someone that we loved them. And that person has gone. I believe that these good intentions will be revealed and that they will be fulfilled in heaven. There will be great forgiveness ; many tears will be shed—tears that purify the heart. The Day of Resurrection will truly be a great cleansing.

19§ And after that there will be a celebration. A very great celebration. And God will be there.

2. Why is it important that the dead are raised ?

20§ Belief in the resurrection of the dead was not a given even in Jesus' time. The Pharisees believed in it, but the Sadducees did not ; that is why they sought to trap Jesus with their story of the woman with seven husbands [20].

21§ I believe that the resurrection is important, so that the lives of the little ones—whom the powerful have crushed, if not physically, then at least morally—are not lost. It is important that justice be done, that the righteous be restored to their rights, that the unrighteous be declared as such, and that what they have stolen be taken from them. The tears and cries of the afflicted will not have been in vain ; God will have heard them and will have come to their aid.

22§ And the same goes for the happy moments of love, joy and fellowship : they are precious to God, and He will not let them be lost in the night [21]

23§ With the resurrection, what we are experiencing now on this earth has significance ; what we do has gravity, has weight. We are not insubstantial clouds drifting at the mercy of the winds ; our actions matter, our lives matter [22]. It is up to us to give weight to what we do.

24§ And how can we give weight to our actions ? By expressing the goodness that God has placed within us and around us when He created us, in what we do and what we do not do, in what we say and what we do not say, in what we think and what we do not think.
It is up to us to protect these seeds of goodness, to watch over their growth and to shield them from pests and bad weather.

25§ We must nurture the seeds of goodness within us that are part of the ‘natural' goodness of creation. We must also nurture the ‘supernatural' seeds received at baptism—faith, hope and love : they multiply our thoughts, words and deeds inspired by the natural goodness within us ; indeed, they elevate them to a higher order.

26§ Our actions here on earth carry the weight of the love we have put into them, and as love will pass into eternity [23], we shall be reunited with them at the Resurrection.

3. Why is it important that Christ was resurrected ?

The Resurrection : a confirmation of the Son by the Father
27§ Jesus affirmed a unique relationship of sonship with his Father, whom he identified as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, also known as Israel. The religious authorities regarded this as blasphemy punishable by death, but he persisted in his claim, which led to his crucifixion. By raising him from the dead, God refuted his accusers whilst at the same time confirming his Son.

28§ Indeed, if Jesus had not been raised from the dead, it would have meant that his claim to speak in the name of God as the Son would have been false, and this would have tainted everything he had said and done on earth.

29§ I believe this helps to explain Jesus' silence before Pilate : Jesus had said what he had to say ; it was now up to his Father to speak by raising him from the dead—a resurrection which Jesus had foretold three times.

30§ The resurrection of Jesus assures us that he spoke the truth when he claimed to be the Messiah of the end times, God's plenipotentiary envoy to establish his Kingdom ; indeed, even more than that, the only-begotten Son born of God before all ages, begotten and not created, ‘of one substance with the Father', as the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed states.

31§ The resurrection of Jesus also guarantees to us that Jesus was telling the truth when he affirmed that he had the power to heal people of their sins, and indeed, that he had the power to bring them into eternal life [24].

The Resurrection : an unfathomable mystery
32§ I believe that the Resurrection of Christ is an event of a magnitude that infinitely surpasses our understanding. It is easy for us to reduce the resurrection of Jesus to that of Lazarus ; it is more difficult for us to perceive how it shakes creation to its very core, and even more difficult to conceive of what even the angels had not imagined : a glorified human body has ascended into heaven and stands within the very bosom of the Trinity.

33§ And this glorified body takes on a cosmic dimension when we realise that it is capable of drawing us along with it in its ascent to the Father, he who is the head of the mystical body of the Church.

5§ 私にとって、復活におけるこの「命への息吹の回復」は、生物学的・物質的なものとは異なる命への道を開いてくれる。私たちは霊的な領域、すなわち「息」の領域へと移り行くのである。

復活：別の領域への移行

6§ そして、この移行は想像し難いものである。私たちは本能的に、復活を人の蘇生として捉えてしまう：地面に横たわり、息絶えていた人々が、誰かが心肺蘇生法を施すと、あっという間に立ち直る――といった具合に。ここでは、私たちは「同一」の領域、すなわち被造物の領域にとどまっている。ラザロの復活も同様である。彼はかつての命を取り戻すが、それは再び死ぬためだけである [29].

復活――再会の祝典

11§ 私たちは、私たちを愛してくれた人々、私たちが愛した人々、そして私たちにとって大切な意味を持っていたすべての人々と再会する。とりわけ、子孫のために戦った両親や先祖たちである。私たちは、教師や指導者、そして社会で生きる術を教えてくれたすべての人々と再会する。また、私たちを見守ってくれた霊的な存在――つまり守護天使たち――とも再会する。

12§ そうして初めて、私たちは、時には気づかぬうちに、彼らにどれほど多くの恩義を負っていたかを悟ることになる。私たちは、気づかないうちに人々が私たちを助けてくれた、大小さまざまな行いのすべてに気づくでしょう。私たちを支え、養い、守ってくれた連帯の連鎖のすべてに気づくでしょう。そして、私たちが害を与え、それでも許された数々の瞬間を目の当たりにするでしょう。

13§ そこには顔と声が存在します。両親、祖父母、兄弟姉妹の顔。そして、教師や指導者の顔です。そしておそらく、私たちを養うために命を捧げてくれた生き物たち――動物や魚――の声も聞こえてくるでしょう。

14§ 私たちは、彼らに対して、そして神に対して負っている負債――すなわち、正義と善に満ちた人生を送るという負債――に気づくことになるでしょう。
復活、それは啓示

15§ 復活の時、私たちは全体像、すなわち全体像を把握できるようになるでしょう。私たちは、その小さな声がどこから来ていたのかを知るでしょう――それは、弱者が強者に踏みつけられる光景に直面したとき、不義で邪悪な者たちの傲慢さに直面したとき、そして事故や病気、死という不条理に直面したとき、決して屈することを拒んだあの声です。

16§ そして、私たちは自らの行いの真実を目の当たりにするでしょう。「人の心は複雑で病んでいる」と、預言者エレミヤはすでに旧約聖書 [31]で語っている。
私たちは、自らの行動の背後にある深い動機について、必ずしも明確に理解しているわけではない。復活の時、私たちは、自分たちが成し遂げたこと、そして成し遂げたかったことの中に、愛の真の尺度を見出すだろう――そして同時に、自分たちが犯した悪の真の尺度もまた見出すことになる。その時には、偽りや嘘はもはや通用しなくなるでしょう。

17§ そして、それはそれで良いのです。私は、復活の時には、この地上で私たちが行ったことの多くが救われると信じています。神は、善を行おうとしたができなかった瞬間をどのように救うべきかをご存知でしょう。神は、その中にあった善意や、愛の小さな種をどのように評価すべきかをご存知なのです。

18§ 私たちは誰かに許しを請うことができなかったり、逆に、その人を許すことができなかったりした。あるいは、誰かに「愛している」と伝えることができなかったのかもしれない。そして、その人は去ってしまった。私は、こうした善意が明らかにされ、天国で成就されると信じている。そこには大きな赦しがあり、多くの涙が流されるだろう――心を清める涙が。復活の日は、まさに偉大な清めの日となるだろう。

19§ そしてその後、祝宴が催される。実に盛大な祝宴だ。そして、神もそこに臨在される。

2. 死者がよみがえることがなぜ重要なのか？

20§ 死者の復活を信じることは、イエスの時代でさえ当然のことではありませんでした。パリサイ人たちはそれを信じていましたが、サドカイ人たちは信じていませんでした。だからこそ、彼らは「七人の夫を持った女」の話を持ち出して、イエスを陥れようとしたのです [32]。

21§ 私は、復活が重要であると信じている。それは、権力者たちによって――たとえ肉体的にはなくとも、少なくとも道徳的には――押しつぶされてしまった「小さな者たち」の命が、失われないためである。正義が貫かれ、義人がその権利を取り戻し、不義な者がそのように宣告され、彼らが盗んだものが彼らから取り戻されることが重要なのである。苦しむ者たちの涙と叫びは、決して無駄にはならない。神はそれらを聞き届け、彼らの助けに駆けつけてくださるからだ。

22§ そして、愛と喜び、そして交わりの幸せな瞬間についても同じことが言える。それらは神にとって尊いものであり、神はそれらが夜の闇に消え去ることを許さないだろう [33]

23§ 復活によって、私たちが今この地上で経験していることには意味が生まれ、私たちの行いには重み、意義が宿る。私たちは、風のなすがままに漂う実体のない雲などではない。私たちの行動は重要であり、私たちの生は重要なのである [34]。私たちの行いに重みを与えるかどうかは、私たち次第なのです。

24§ では、どうすれば私たちの行いに重みを与えることができるのでしょうか？それは、神が私たちを創造された際に、私たちの内と周囲に置かれた善を、私たちが何をするか、何をしないか、何を言うか、何を言わないか、何を考えるか、何を考えないか、という営みの中で表現することによってです。
これらの善の種を守り、その成長を見守り、害虫や悪天候から守ることは、私たち次第なのです。

25§ 私たちは、被造物の「自然」の善の一部である、内なる善の種を育まなければなりません。また、洗礼によって授かった「超自然的」な種――信仰、希望、愛――も育まなければなりません。それらは、私たちの内にある自然の善に触発された思い、言葉、行いを増幅させ、さらにはそれらをより高い次元へと引き上げてくれるのです。

26§ この地上の私たちの行いには、そこに注ぎ込まれた愛の重みが宿っています。そして、愛は永遠へと移りゆくもの [35]であるため、復活の時には、私たちはそれらと再び一つになるのです。

3. キリストが復活されたことは、なぜ重要なのでしょうか？

復活：父による御子の承認

27§ イエスは、アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブ（すなわちイスラエル）の神であると自認した御父との、唯一無二の「子」としての関係を断言した。宗教指導者たちはこれを死刑に値する冒涜と見なしたが、イエスはその主張を貫き通したため、十字架刑に処された。神はイエスを死からよみがえらせることで、告発者たちの主張を退け、同時に御子を認めたのである。

28§ 実際、もしイエスが死からよみがえらなかったならば、御子として神の御名によって語るというイエスの主張は偽りであったことになり、その結果、イエスが地上で語ったこと、行ったことすべてが汚されてしまったことになるだろう。

29§ これこそが、ピラトの前でイエスが沈黙を守った理由を説明する一助となるだろう。イエスは言うべきことはすべて言い尽くしていた。あとは、父なる神がイエスを死からよみがえらせることによって語られる番であった――その復活は、イエスが三度も予告していたことである。

30§ イエスの復活は、彼が「終わりの時のメシア」、すなわち神の王国を確立するための神の全権使者として自らを称した際、真実を語っていたことを私たちに確信させてくれます。それどころか、ニカイア・コンスタンティノポリス信条が述べているように、イエスは「すべての世の初めから神より生まれた独り子」であり、「造られたのではなく、生み出された」ものであり、「父と同質」であるという事実さえも、さらに確かなものとして示しているのです。

31§ イエスの復活はまた、イエスが人々の罪を赦す力、ひいては彼らを永遠の命へと導く力を持っていると断言された際、その言葉が真実であったことを私たちに保証するものである [36].

復活：計り知れない神秘

32§ 私は、キリストの復活が、私たちの理解を無限に超えるほど巨大な出来事であると信じています。私たちは、イエスの復活をラザロの復活と同列に捉えがちですが、それがいかにして被造物の根幹を揺るがすものであるかを理解することは難しく、さらに、天使たちでさえ想像し得なかったこと――すなわち、栄光に包まれた人間の体が天に昇り、三位一体の御懐の中に立っていること――を想像することは、なおさら困難です。

33§ そして、この栄光に包まれた肉体が、教会の神秘的な体の頭である御父のもとへと昇る際に、私たちをもその昇天に引き連れていくことができると悟るとき、その肉体は宇宙的な次元を帯びてくるのです。

[10] En latin, gravis désigne ce qui est lourd, ce qui a du poids, qui pèse. Lorsque l'on tamise les épis de blé, la balle n'a pas de poids, elle est emportée par le vent, tandis que le grain de blé, qui est lourd, reste dans le tamis

Dès lors, même ceux qui sont morts en Christ sont perdus.
Si nous avons mis notre espérance en Christ pour cette vie seulement, nous sommes les plus à plaindre de tous les hommes.

Avertissement. Un geste qui n'est pas anodin
Ce geste de rencontre des autres religions n'est pas anodin et il convient d'être conscient des enjeux de cette rencontre. Une religion est quelque chose d'important sinon d'essentiel pour ses adeptes, aussi ne devons-nous pas nous comporter en touristes désinvoltes en l'abordant avec des idées simplettes et réductrices. La rencontre demande de l'humilité – je n'ai pas dit de l'humiliation. Je crois aussi que ce geste demande d'être au fait de sa propre foi, de ce que l'on croit. Sinon on risque d'être perdu par rapport à des propositions de sens total qui ont leur propre cohérence et qui ne sont pas forcément compatibles entre elles. [2]

2. La Voie des Anciens (Theravada)

Chap. 1. Histoire de la Voie des Anciens

57§ Le bouddhisme s'est répandu dans l'Asie indianisée du sud-est à partir du troisième siècle avant l'ère chrétienne : Sri Lanka [3], Myanmar, Thaïlande, Laos, Cambodge, et Indonésie (avant que celle-ci devienne musulmane au onzième siècle). La diffusion s'est faite principalement par voie maritime.

58§ La Voie des Anciens s'appuie sur la Triple Corbeille écrite en pali, une langue supposée parlé par le Bouddha même si, d'après la philologie, il aurait plutôt parlé le maghadi.

59§ Le pali joue le rôle d'une langue sacrée pour la Voie des Anciens qui l'utilise dans la liturgie, même si elle n'est plus comprise par les fidèles. Cette sacralisation explique la traduction en pali de textes bouddhistes cinghalais par Buddhaghosa, le grand commentateur du cinquième siècle à l'origine du célèbre commentaire du Visuddhimagga.

1. L'intégration de l'animisme

60§ Le bouddhisme de la Voie des Anciens a intégré les esprits des religions animistes autochtones en les incluant dans le cycle des renaissances : aspirant à la libération, ils se mettent au service des moines propagateurs du message du Bouddha.

61§ Deux exemples montrent comment le bouddhisme a intégré les divinités animistes en les subordonnant à la figure du Bouddha :

alors que le Bouddha est en train de consolider son expérience de l'Éveil, un déluge survint qui menaçait de l'emporter : une divinité-serpent nommée Muchalinda a alors abrité le Bouddha sous les capuchons de ses sept têtes tandis qu'elle le surélevait par ses anneaux [Dans le Grand Véhicule, Nagarjuna aurait reçu des divinités serpent les textes sacrés de la « Perfection de la Sagesse » qu'elles protégeaient.]] ;
l'enceinte d'un monastère thaï comporte une maison miniature montée sur pilier où sont déposées des offrandes pour la divinité locale du sol, afin qu'elle protège le monastère.

2. Le nationalisme

62§ L'Asie du Sud-Est, hors Vietnam, pratique majoritairement le bouddhisme de la Voie des Anciens. Il sert de marqueur identitaire dans les discours nationalistes pour justifier la violence envers les minorités ethniques : les Tamouls hindous du Sri Lanka, les Rohingyas musulmans du Myanmar et les Malais musulmans au sud de la Thaïlande.

63§ L'hebdomadaire américain Time affichait ainsi sur sa couverture du 1e juillet 2013 le portrait du moine birman U Wirathu, célèbre pour ses discours de haine contre les Rohingyas.

3. Le calendrier des fêtes

64§ Les fêtes les plus importances dans les sociétés d'Asie du Sud-Est portent sur le Bouddha Sakyamuni et sur la communauté des moines.

65§ La vie du Bouddha est commémorée par la fête de Vesak le huitième jour du quatrième mois lunaire qui célèbre la naissance, l'Éveil et la mort du Bouddha
tandis que la fête de l'Asalha puja célèbre le premier sermon du Bouddha à la pleine lune du huitième mois.

66§ La retraite annuelle de trois mois des moines pendant la mousson donne lieu à différentes célébrations :

la fête de Vassa célèbre le début de la retraite le lendemain de la fête du premier sermon du Bouddha à la pleine lune du huitième mois ;
Paravana célèbre la fin de la retraite des moines le lendemain de la pleine lune du onzième mois ;
les laïcs font des offrandes au monastère pendant la fête de Kathina qui est organisée dans le mois qui suit la fin de la retraite.

4. Le noviciat traditionnel des hommes

67§ La prégnance du bouddhisme dans la culture thaïe s'explique en particulier par le passage traditionnel des jeunes hommes thaïs au monastère : ils sont censés effectuer au moins une fois dans leur vie une période de noviciat pendant laquelle ils vivent dans le monastère. Le novice transfère les mérites ainsi acquis en premier lieu à sa mère qui n'a pas pu effectuer ce noviciat réservé aux garçons, puis à son père.

68§ Le passage en monastère a sans doute permis de donner un minimum d'éducation aux enfants des villageois, mais l'avenir de cette institution est menacé dans une société urbaine où la jeunesse des classes moyennes a goûté aux commodités du réfrigérateur et de l'Internet.

5. Le statut des novices femmes

69§ Actuellement, les femmes novices ne peuvent accéder au statut de moniales à part entière en Asie du Sud-Est.

70§ La raison avancée tient à l'histoire : le rituel d'ordination monastique a été perdu au onzième siècle pendant l'invasion du Sri Lanka par l'empire tamoul hindou qui avait persécuté le bouddhisme. Le rituel pour les moines a été restauré à partir de la version transmise en Birmanie, mais qui ne comprenait pas le rituel pour les moniales.

71§ Le rituel pour les moniales existe cependant en langue chinoise et l'on pourrait imaginer sa rétro-traduction en pali, mais cette solution n'est pas retenue pour l'instant, peut-être à cause de la sacralisation du pali :le moindre écart par rapport à la formule originale perdue invaliderait la rétro-traduction ?

Chap. 2. L'idéal de la Voie des Anciens

72§ La Voie des Anciens se veut l'enseignement originel, non altéré du Bouddha Sakyamuni ; pour elle, les textes du Grand Véhicule sont des faux qui n'ont pas été prononcés par le Bouddha.

73§ La figure ultime de la Voie des Anciens est celle de l'être qui a mérité de ne plus renaître, le « Méritant » [4].
A la fin de sa dernière existence, il échappe au cycle des renaissances, ayant éteint en lui le feu des passions conformément aux Quatre nobles vérités.

74§ Le moine qui avance sur l'Octuple sentier déracine les attachements sensuels du monde du désir, mais aussi les attachements spirituels comme le désir de renaître dans les espaces célestes et immatériels du monde de la forme et du monde sans forme [5].

Au fur et à mesure de sa progression, le pratiquant réduit son nombre de renaissances jusqu'à ne plus renaître qu'une fois avant d'entrer en Nirvana, ce qui caractérise l'état de « Méritant ».

La progression comprend quatre étapes successives :

les disciples « entrés dans le courant » : ils sont assurés de ne plus renaître dans les destinées malheureuses ; ils renaîtront au plus six fois ;
les disciples « ne renaissant plus qu'une fois » dans le monde humain ;
les disciples « ne renaissant plus » dans le monde humain : ils atteindront le Nirvana dans les destinées célestes ;
les disciples « méritants » : parvenus à leur dernière existence, ils ne renaîtront plus.

75§ Arrivés à ce point, nous pouvons préciser un point qui suscitera sans doute un abime de perplexité chez le lecteur : l'expression « entrer en Nirvana » n'a de sens que dans notre niveau de vérité relative. En rigueur de terme, l'âme étant un assemblage instable et provisoire d'éléments hétérogènes, elle ne peut pas entrer dans la réalité absolue : tel le personnage dans un rêve qui disparaît quand le dormeur se réveille.

76§ Buddhaghosa, un théoricien de la Voie des Anciens du cinquième siècle, a ainsi écrit : « Il y a Nirvana, mais personne n'est « nirvané » [personne n'entre en Nirvana] ».

Warning. A gesture that is by no means insignificant
This gesture of engagement with other religions is by no means insignificant, and we must be aware of the implications of such an encounter.
A religion is something important, if not essential, to its followers ; therefore, we must not behave like casual tourists by approaching it with simplistic and reductive ideas. Such an encounter calls for humility – I did not say humiliation.
I also believe that this act requires us to be clear about our own faith, about what we believe. Otherwise, we risk being bewildered by proposals offering a complete system of meaning, each with its own internal coherence, which are not necessarily compatible with one another. [7]

2. The Way of the Ancients (Theravada) )

Chapter 1. History of the Way of the Ancients

57§ Buddhism spread throughout Indianised South-East Asia from the third century BCE : Sri Lanka [8], Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Indonesia (before the latter became Muslim in the eleventh century). The spread took place mainly by sea.

58§ The Path of the Ancients is based on the Tripitaka written in Pali, a language believed to have been spoken by the Buddha himself, although, according to philology, he is thought to have spoken Magadhi instead.

59§ Pali serves as a sacred language for the Path of the Ancients, which uses it in liturgy, even though it is no longer understood by the faithful. This sacralisation explains the translation into Pali of Sinhalese Buddhist texts by Buddhaghosa, the great fifth-century commentator responsible for the famous commentary on the Visuddhimagga.

1. The integration of animism into the Path of the Ancients

60§ The Buddhism of the Path of the Ancients has integrated the spirits of indigenous animist religions by including them in the cycle of rebirths : aspiring to liberation, they place themselves at the service of the monks who propagate the Buddha's message.

61§ Two examples illustrate how Buddhism has integrated animist deities by subordinating them to the figure of the Buddha :

whilst the Buddha was consolidating his experience of Enlightenment, a deluge struck which threatened to sweep him away : a serpent deity -serpent deity named Muchalinda then sheltered the Buddha beneath the hoods of its seven heads whilst lifting him up with its coils [In the Mahayana tradition, Nagarjuna is said to have received the sacred texts of the ‘Perfection of Wisdom' from serpent deities, who were protecting them.] ] ;

2. Nationalism

62§ In South-East Asia, with the exception of Vietnam, the majority practise Theravada Buddhism. It serves as a marker of identity in nationalist discourse to justify violence against ethnic minorities : the Hindu Tamils of Sri Lanka, the Muslim Rohingya of Myanmar and the Muslim Malays in southern Thailand.

63§ The American weekly Time featured on its 1 July 2013 cover a portrait of the Burmese monk U Wirathu, notorious for his hate speech against the Rohingya.

3. The calendar of festivals

64§ The most important festivals in Southeast Asian societies centre on the Buddha Sakyamuni and the monastic community.

65§ The life of the Buddha is commemorated by the festival of Vesak the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, which marks the Buddha's birth, Enlightenment and passing away,
whilst the festival of Asalha puja commemorates the Buddha's first sermon on the full moon of the eighth month.

66§ The monks' annual three-month retreat during the monsoon gives rise to various celebrations :

the festival of Vassa marks the start of the retreat on the day after the festival commemorating the Buddha's first sermon on the full moon of the eighth month ;
Paravana marks the end of the monks' retreat on the day after the full moon of the eleventh month ;
laypeople make offerings to the monastery during the festival of Kathina, which is held in the month following the end of the retreat.

4. The traditional novitiate for men

67§ The prevalence of Buddhism in Thai culture can be explained in particular by the traditional practice of young Thai men entering the monastery : they are expected to undertake a period of novitiate at least once in their lives, during which they live in the monastery. The novice transfers the merits thus acquired first to his mother, who was unable to undertake this novitiate reserved for boys, and then to his father.

68§ The period spent in a monastery undoubtedly helped to provide the villagers' children with a basic education, but the the future of this institution is under threat in an urban society where middle-class youth have come to enjoy the conveniences of the fridge and the internet.

5. The status of female novices

69§ At present, female novices cannot attain the status of full-fledged nuns in .

70§ The reason given is historical : the monastic ordination ritual was lost in the eleventh century during the invasion of Sri Lanka by the Hindu Tamil Empire, which had persecuted Buddhism. The ritual for monks was restored from the version transmitted in Burma, but this did not include the ritual for nuns.

71§ The ritual for nuns does, however, exist in Chinese, and one might envisage its back-translation into Pali ; yet this solution has has not been adopted for the time being, perhaps due to the sacralisation of Pali : would the slightest deviation from the lost original formula invalidate the back-translation ?

Chapter 2. The ideal of the Path of the Ancients

72§ The Path of the Ancients claims to be the original, unaltered teaching of the Buddha Sakyamuni ; for this tradition, the Mahayana texts are forgeries that were not spoken by the Buddha.

73§ The ultimate figure in the Way of the Ancients is that of the being who has earned the right to be free from rebirth, the ‘Meritorious One' ' [9].

At the end of his final existence, he escapes the cycle of rebirths, having extinguished within himself the fire of passions in accordance with the Four Noble Truths.

74§ The monk who progresses along the Noble Eightfold Path uproots the sensual attachments of the realm of desire, but also spiritual attachments such as the desire to be reborn in the celestial and immaterial realms of the world of form and the formless world [10]. As he progresses, the practitioner reduces the number of his rebirths until he is reborn only once more before enter Nirvana, which characterises the state of ‘ Meritorious One (Arhat)'.

Progress comprises four successive stages :

disciples who have ‘entered the stream' : they are assured of no longer being reborn in the unhappy realms ; they will be reborn no more than six times ;
disciples who will be ‘reborn only once more' in the human realm ;
disciples who ‘will be reborn no more' in the human realm : they will attain Nirvana in the heavenly realms ;
‘meritorious' disciples : having reached their final existence, they will be reborn no more.

75§ Having reached this point, we may clarify a point that will no doubt give rise to a great deal of perplexity in the reader : the expression ‘to enter Nirvana' only makes sense within our realm of relative truth. Strictly speaking, as the soul is an unstable and temporary assemblage of heterogeneous elements, it cannot enter into absolute reality : just as a figure in a dream vanishes when the sleeper awakens.

76§ Buddhaghosa, a fifth-century theorist of the Path of the Ancients, wrote : ‘There is Nirvana, but no one is “nirvanised” [no one enters Nirvana].'

警告。。決して些細ではない姿勢

他の宗教と関わるというこの姿勢は決して些細なものではなく、我々はそうした出会いがもたらす意味合いを認識しなければならない。
宗教とは、信者にとって不可欠とまではいかなくとも重要なものである。したがって、単純化され、矮小化された考えでそれに接し、まるで気ままな観光客のように振る舞ってはならない。そのような出会いに求められるのは謙虚さだ――屈辱ではない。
また、この行為には、私たち自身の信仰、すなわち私たちが何を信じているのかについて、明確にしておくことが求められると私は考える。そうでなければ、それぞれ独自の内部的整合性を持ち、必ずしも互いに両立するとは限らない、完全な意味体系を提示する提案に、私たちは戸惑ってしまう危険がある。 [12]

2. 上座部仏教

第1章. 歴史

57§ 仏教は紀元前3世紀から、インド文化の影響を受けた東南アジア全域に広まった。スリランカ [13]、ミャンマー、タイ、ラオス、カンボジア、そしてインドネシア（同国が11世紀にイスラム化される以前）である。その伝播は主に海路によって行われた。

58§ 「上座部仏教」は、パーリ語で書かれた三蔵に基づいている。パーリ語は仏陀自身が話していたと信じられている言語だが、言語学的には、仏陀はむしろマガダ語を話していたと考えられている。

59§ パーリ語は「上座部仏教」にとって神聖な言語であり、信者にはもはや理解されていないにもかかわらず、典礼において使用されている。この神聖化こそが、5世紀の偉大な注釈者ブッダゴーサによるシンハラ語仏教経典のパーリ語への翻訳を説明している。同氏は、『清浄道論』の有名な注釈を著した人物である。

1. 「上座部仏教」へのアニミズムの統合

60§ 「上座部仏教」の仏教は、先住のアニミズム宗教の精霊たちを輪廻の循環に取り込むことで統合してきた。解脱を志す精霊たちは、仏の教えを広める僧侶たちに仕えるのである。

61§ 仏教がアニミズムの神々を仏の御姿に従属させることでいかに統合したかを示す二つの例がある：

仏が悟りの体験を確固たるものにしていく最中、大洪水が襲い、仏を押し流しかねない状況となった。その時、ムチャリンダという名の蛇の神が、その七つの頭の頭蓋の下に仏を保護しつつ、自らの体を巻きつけて仏を持ち上げた。[大乗仏教の伝統では、ナーガールジュナは、経典を守護していた蛇の神々から『般若波羅蜜多』の聖典を受け取ったとされている。] ] ;

2. ナショナリズム

62§ 東南アジアでは、ベトナムを除き、大多数が上座部仏教を信仰している。これは、スリランカのヒンドゥー教徒であるタミル人、ミャンマーのイスラム教徒であるロヒンギャ、そしてタイ南部のイスラム教徒であるマレー人といった少数民族に対する暴力を正当化するための、ナショナリズム的言説におけるアイデンティティの指標として機能している。

63§ 米国の週刊誌『タイム』は、2013年7月1日号の表紙に、ロヒンギャに対するヘイトスピーチで悪名高いビルマの僧侶ウ・ウィラトゥの肖像を掲載した。

3. 祭りの暦

64§ 東南アジア社会における最も重要な祭事は、釈迦牟尼仏と僧伽を中心に展開している。
65§ 仏陀の生涯は、ヴェサックという祭りで記念される。これは旧暦4月8日にあたり、仏陀の誕生、悟り、入滅を祝うものである。
一方、アサルハ・プジャという祭りは、旧暦8月の満月の日に仏陀が初めて説法を行ったことを記念するものである。

66§ モンスーンの時期に行われる僧侶たちの年1回の3ヶ月間の安居（ヴァッサ）には、様々な祝祭が伴う：

ヴァッサの祭りは、8月の満月の日に仏陀が最初の説法を行ったことを記念する祭りの翌日に、安居の始まりを告げるものである；
パラヴァナは、第11月の満月の翌日に僧侶たちの安居の終わりを告げる；
信徒たちは、安居の終了後の月に開催されるカティナの祭りの期間中、寺院へ供養を行う。

4. 男性のための伝統的な見習い修行

67§ タイ文化における仏教の浸透は、特に若いタイ人男性が僧院に入るという伝統的な慣習によって説明できる。彼らは生涯に少なくとも一度、僧院で生活しながら見習い修行を行うことが期待されている。見習い僧は、こうして得た功徳を、まず、男子にのみ許されたこの見習い修行を行うことができなかった母親に、次に父親に譲る。

68§ 寺院で過ごした期間は、村人の子供たちに基礎教育を与える上で間違いなく役立ったが、中流階級の若者が冷蔵庫やインターネットの利便性を享受するようになった都市社会において、この制度の将来は脅かされている。

5. 女子見習い修道者の地位

69§ 現在、女子見習い修道者は、において本格的な尼僧の地位を得ることはできない。

70§ その理由は歴史的なものである。11世紀、仏教を迫害していたヒンドゥー教のタミル帝国によるスリランカ侵攻の際に、尼僧の得度儀式が失われてしまったためだ。比丘の儀式はビルマで伝承されていた版本から復元されたが、尼僧の儀式は含まれていなかった。

71§ しかし、尼僧のための儀式は中国語で現存しており、それをパーリ語へ逆翻訳することも考えられる。とはいえ、おそらくパーリ語の神聖化のためか、この解決策は今のところ採用されていない。失われた元の儀式文からわずかにでも逸脱すれば、その逆翻訳は無効になってしまうのだろうか？

第2章. 理想

72§ 「上座部仏教」は、釈迦牟尼仏による原本のままの、改変されていない教えであると主張している。この伝統によれば、大乗の経典は仏が説いたものではない偽作である。

73§ 「上座部仏教」における究極の存在とは、輪廻から解脱する権利を獲得した者、すなわち「阿羅漢（アラハント）」である。 [14]

その最後の生が終わる時、彼は四聖諦に従って自らの内に煩悩の火を消し尽くし、輪廻の連鎖から解脱する。

74§ 八正道に沿って歩む比丘は、欲界の感覚的な執着を断ち切るだけでなく、有形界や無形界といった天界や無色界に生まれ変わりたいという願望といった精神的な執着も断ち切る [15]。修行が進むにつれ、修行者は転生の回数を減らし、最終的に涅槃に入る前にあと一度だけ転生することになる。これが「聖者」の状態の特徴である。

修行の進展は、以下の4つの段階からなる：

「入流」した弟子たち：彼らはもはや苦の領域に生まれ変わることはないと保証されており、生まれ変わる回数は6回以下となる；
人間界に「あと一度だけ」生まれ変わる弟子たち；
人間界に「二度と生まれ変わらない」弟子たち：彼らは天界において涅槃に達する；
「阿羅漢（アラハント）」弟子たち：最後の生に達した後、彼らは二度と生まれ変わらない。

75§ ここまで来たところで、読者にとって間違いなく大きな困惑を招くであろう一点を明確にしておこう。「涅槃に入る」という表現は、相対的な真実の領域内でのみ意味をなす。厳密に言えば、魂は不安定で一時的な異質な要素の集合体であるため、絶対的な現実に入ることはできない。それは、眠りから覚めたときに夢の中の姿が消え去るのと同じである。

76§ 5世紀の「上座部仏教」の理論家ブッダゴーサは、次のように記している。「涅槃は存在するが、誰も『涅槃化』されることはない［誰も涅槃に入ることはない］。」

a) La doctrine du Triple poison

33§ Le Triple poison désigne ce qui ensemence les actes, les rendant capables de fructifier en conditions d'existence bonnes ou mauvaises dans les vies suivantes :

le premier poison est l'avidité, la cupidité qui pousse à posséder, à mettre la main sur quelque chose ou quelqu'un : « il me faut ceci ou cela, cela va faire mon bonheur » - et pour y arriver on est tenté de mentir, de voler, de tuer ;
le deuxième poison regroupe la haine, la peur, la jalousie, les sentiments négatifs qui, à l'inverse du premier, poussent à rejeter, à repousser : « loin de moi cette chose, cette personne, elle va faire mon malheur ». Ces sentiments poussent à mentir, voler, tuer ;
le troisième et dernier poison est d'ordre intellectuel et non plus affectif : il s'agit de la croyance erronée en l'âme, le Soi, qui en réalité n'a aucune réalité substantielle puisqu'elle est un assemblage instable et provisoire d'éléments hétérogènes [3]. S'appuyant sur cette conviction erronée, les poisons de l'avidité et de la colère infectent le mental par leurs désirs centrés sur ce que je dois faire pour obtenir mon bonheur et éviter mon malheur : moi, moi et encore moi.

34§ Le Bouddha a extirpé les racines du Triple poison, il pose désormais des actes « karmiquement » neutres : n'étant plus conditionnés par l'avidité ou la colère, vides de tout égocentrisme, les actes du Bouddha ressemblent à des graines stérilisées, incapables de fructifier en vies suivantes : le capital « karmique » a cessé d'être alimenté et il sera soldé dans cette vie-ci, la dernière du Bouddha Sakyamuni.

b) La doctrine des Quatre Nobles Vérités

35§ La doctrine des Quatre Nobles Vérités reprend celle du Triple poison sous un autre angle.

36§ Nous avons déjà rencontré la première noble vérité qui diagnostique que tout ce qui constitue ce monde est « douleur » -.

37§ La seconde noble vérité affirme que la « soif » est à l'origine de la douleur : soif de plaisirs sensibles, soif d'exister pour obtenir ces plaisirs mais aussi parce que se sentir exister est en soi une jouissance, soif de ne pas exister parce qu'on estime ne plus pouvoir connaître le plaisir – soif négative qui dit en creux un intense désir de jouissance.

38§ La troisième noble vérité promet qu'on peut faire cesser la « douleur » - en éteignant le feu de la soif. L'extinction se dit nirvana en sanskrit : une bougie atteint le nirvana quand, faute de cire, la flamme s'éteint. La cire représente les passions, tandis que la flamme représente la soif.

39§ La quatrième noble vérité donne le remède pour éteindre la soif, à savoir l'Octuple sentier décrit en trois registres :
stabilisation de sa vie par l'action, la parole et les moyens d'existence justes : ni mensonge, ni vol, ni meurtre, ni sexualité irresponsable, ni addiction ;
stabilisation du mental : le mental est semblable à un singe qui ne cesse de passer d'une branche à l'autre ; on le calme par l'effort juste, la concentration juste, l'attention juste : on se concentrera par exemple sur les différentes phases de la respiration ;
compréhension intime par la pensée et la vision justes de la vérité révélée par le Bouddha, en particulier l'illusion de l'âme comme principe individuel permanent.

40§ Le Bouddha consolide son expérience mystique pendant un mois avant d'enseigner sa voie au parc des Gazelles, à Sarnath, auprès de ses cinq futurs disciples. Cet événement appelé la mise en route de la roue de la Loi [du Bouddha] est représenté au fronton de temples bouddhistes par la roue à huit rayons (l'octuple sentier) encadrée de deux gazelles.

41§ Le geste codé du Bouddha de « la mise en route de la roue de la Loi » est réalisé avec l'index et le pouce de chaque main joints pour former un cercle, les autres doigts étant en extension ; la paume de la main gauche est tournée vers le cœur tandis que celle de la main droite est tournée vers l'extérieur ; les deux mains sont élevées au niveau du cœur, le medium de la main gauche touchant le point de jonction de l'index et du pouce de la main droite.

c) La fondation de la communauté monastique

42§ Une communauté de moines se forme autour du Bouddha, l'amenant à préciser les règles de cette forme de vie où l'on « quitte le foyer » pour marcher sur la voie du Bouddha.

43§ Sur l'insistance de sa tante, Mahaprajapati Gautami, le Bouddha Sakyamuni a aussi ouvert la voie monastique aux femmes [4]. Le Bouddha demandera cependant que les moniales soient subordonnées aux moines.

44§ Des laïcs ont contribué par leurs dons à faire vivre la communauté des moines et des moniales. Ces dons ont permis aux moines de s'installer dans des monastères et de cesser la vie itinérante.

45§ Le Triple joyau est désormais constitué : l'Éveillé, la Loi prêchée par le Bouddha et la communauté de ceux et celles qui suivent la Loi, soit respectivement, le Bouddha, le Dharma et la Sangha.
46§ Les adeptes bouddhistes prononcent la formule dite de la « Prise du refuge dans le Triple joyau ». La Voie des Anciens la décline de la manière suivante :
47§ « je prends refuge dans le Bouddha ; je prends refuge dans le Dharma ; je prends refuge dans la Sangha ;
pour la deuxième fois, je prends refuge dans le Bouddha ; pour la deuxième fois, je prends refuge dans le Dharma ; pour la deuxième fois, je prends refuge dans la Sangha ;
pour la troisième fois, je prends refuge dans le Bouddha ; pour la troisième fois, je prends refuge dans le Dharma ; pour la troisième fois, je prends refuge dans la Sangha » [5]

d) L'Extinction complète

48§ Après avoir enseigné le Dharma pendant quarante-cinq ans et régulé la vie en communauté monastique, le Bouddha réalise l'extinction complète à l'âge de quatre-vingts ans à Kushinagar. Les artistes bouddhistes le représentent couché entre deux arbres sur le côté droit, la tête à l'est et les pieds à l'ouest.

49§ Les restes mortuaires de son incinération ont été récupérés pour être vénérés dans des tumuli funéraires servant de reliquaires – des stupa. En passant en Chine, les tumuli sont devenus des tours à plusieurs étages appelées « pagodes ».

50§ Les bouddhistes pratiquent la circumambulation autour de ces monuments sacrés en les gardant à main droite. 51§ En parallèle du culte des reliques, les moines se seraient rassemblés au « concile » de Rajagriha pour fixer les enseignements du maître dans la « Triple corbeille » : la corbeille des règlements monastiques, celle des dits du Bouddha et de ses grands disciples et enfin, sans doute plus tardive, celle des traités métaphysiques. Les historiens débattent de la réalité historique de ce concile.

e) L'expansion du bouddhisme en Asie

52§ Le bouddhisme a rayonné en Asie sinisée et en Asie indianisée où il s'est implanté durablement. Il a par contre périclité en Inde. Le premier empereur à avoir unifié une grande partie de l'Inde, l'empereur Ashoka (273-232), s'était pourtant converti au bouddhisme et en avait fait la promotion dans son Empire comme en témoignent les stupa de Sarnath et de Sanchi édifiés sous son règne.

53§ La dynastie Gupta (entre le quatrième siècle et le sixième siècle) a soutenu le bouddhisme et l'hindouisme. L'art bouddhiste a fleuri sous leur règne à Mathura tandis que le roi Kumararagupta 1^er (415-455) dotait l'université bouddhiste de Nalanda appelée à devenir un centre d'études bouddhiste réputé.

54§ L'université de Nalanda a été détruite lors des invasions turques et afghanes vers 1200, mais le bouddhisme avait déjà commencé à décliner en Inde à partir de la seconde moitié du premier millénaire, supplanté par l'hindouisme qui avait réformé la religiosité indienne en préservant ses marqueurs identitaires, à la différence du bouddhisme hétérodoxe [6].

55§ Les trois courants, la Voie des Anciens, le Grand Véhicule et le Véhicule Tantrique rapportent la vie du Bouddha Sakyamuni en suivant la même trame mais ils diffèrent sur son interprétation, en particulier sur la réalité de la disparition du Bouddha Sakyamuni :
la Voie des Anciens considère que le Bouddha Sakyamuni n'est plus présent pour personne ; les deux joyaux de la Loi et de la communauté des moines pallient à sa disparition ;
le Grand Véhicule, suivi en cela par le Véhicule Tantrique, considère que le Bouddha Sakyamuni a fait semblant de disparaître afin de provoquer un sursaut salutaire chez ses disciples, comme le soutient l'un de ses écrits les plus influents, le Sutra du Lotus ; en réalité le Bouddha Sakyamuni est toujours présent et actif.

56§ Ces divergences d'interprétation renvoient à des différences de valorisation de la figure du Bouddha, comme nous allons le voir.

The Life of the Buddha Sakyamuni (continued and concluded)

Warning. A gesture that is not insignificant
This act of engaging with other religions is no trivial matter, and we must be aware of what is at stake in such an encounter. A religion is something important, if not essential, to its followers ; therefore, we must not behave like casual tourists by approaching it with simplistic and reductive ideas. Such an encounter requires humility – I did not say humiliation. I also believe that this gesture requires us to be fully aware of our own faith, of what we believe. Otherwise, we risk being lost amidst proposals for a ‘total' meaning that have their own internal coherence and are not necessarily compatible with one another. [8]

a) The doctrine of the Three Poisons

33§ The Three Poisons refer to that which sows the seeds of actions, enabling them to bear fruit in good or bad conditions of existence in future lives :

the first poison is greed, the desire to possess, to lay hold of something or someone : ‘I must have this or that ; it will make me happy' – and to achieve this, one is tempted to lie, steal or kill ;
the second poison encompasses hatred, fear, jealousy and negative feelings which, unlike the first, drive us to reject and push away : ‘Keep this thing or this person far from me ; it will bring me misery'. These feelings drive us to lie, steal and kill ;
the third and final poison is of an intellectual rather than an emotional nature : it is the mistaken belief in the soul, the Self, which in reality has no substantial existence, since it is an unstable and temporary assembly of heterogeneous elements [9]. Based on this mistaken belief, the poisons of greed and anger infect the mind through desires centred on what I must do to attain my happiness and avoid my unhappiness : me, me and more me.

34§ The Buddha has eradicated the roots of the Triple Poison ; he now performs ‘karmically' neutral actions : no longer conditioned by greed or anger, and devoid of all self-centredness, the Buddha's actions resemble sterilised seeds, incapable of bearing fruit in future lives : the ‘karmic' capital has ceased to be replenished and will be settled in this very life, the last of the Buddha Sakyamuni.

b) The doctrine of the Four Noble Truths

35§ The doctrine of the Four Noble Truths revisits that of the Three Poisons from a different angle.

36§ We have already encountered the first noble truth, which states that everything that constitutes this world is ‘suffering' -.

37§ The second noble truth asserts that ‘thirst' is the root cause of suffering : a thirst for sensory pleasures ; a thirst to exist in order to obtain these pleasures, but also because the very sensation of existing is in itself a source of pleasure ; a thirst not to exist because one feels one can no longer experience pleasure – a negative thirst which, by implication, reveals an intense desire for pleasure.

38§ The Third Noble Truth promises that ‘suffering' can be brought to an end – by extinguishing the fire of thirst. This extinction is called nirvana in Sanskrit : a candle reaches nirvana when, having run out of wax, the flame goes out. The wax represents the passions, whilst the flame represents thirst.

39§ The Fourth Noble Truth provides the remedy for extinguishing thirst, namely the Noble Eightfold Path, described in three aspects :
stabilising one's life through right action, right speech and right livelihood : no lying, no stealing, no killing, no irresponsible sexual behaviour, no addiction ;
stabilising the mind : the mind is like a monkey that never stops jumping from one branch to another ; it is calmed through right effort, right concentration and right mindfulness : one should, for example, focus on the different phases of the breath ;
deep understanding, through right thought and right vision, of the truth revealed by the Buddha, in particular the illusion of the soul as a permanent individual principle.

40§ The Buddha consolidated his mystical experience for a month before teaching his path in the Park of the Gazelles, at Sarnath, to his five future disciples. This event, known as the setting in motion of the Wheel of the Dharma [of the Buddha], is depicted on the pediments of Buddhist temples by the eight-spoked wheel (the Noble Eightfold Path) flanked by two gazelles.

41§ The Buddha's symbolic gesture of ‘setting in motion the Wheel of the Dharma' is performed by joining the index finger and thumb of each hand to form a circle, with the other fingers extended ; the palm of the left hand faces the heart whilst that of the right hand faces outwards ; both hands are raised to heart level, with the middle finger of the left hand touching the junction of the index finger and thumb of the right hand.

c) The founding of the monastic community

42§ A community of monks forms around the Buddha, leading him to lay down the rules for this way of life in which one ‘leaves home' to walk the Buddha's path.

43§ At the insistence of his aunt, Mahaprajapati Gautami, the Buddha Sakyamuni also opened the monastic path to women [10]. The Buddha did, however, stipulate that nuns should be subordinate to the monks.

44§ Laypeople contributed through their donations to the sustenance of the community of monks and nuns. These donations enabled the monks to settle in monasteries and cease their itinerant way of life.

45§ The Triple Gem is now established : the Enlightened One, the Dharma preached by the Buddha, and the community of those who follow the Dharma—namely, the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha.
46§ Buddhist followers recite the formula known as ‘Taking Refuge in the Triple Gem'. The Way of the Ancients sets it out as follows :
47§ ‘ I take refuge in the Buddha ; I take refuge in the Dharma ; I take refuge in the Sangha ;
for the second time, I take refuge in the Buddha ; for the second time, I take refuge in the Dharma ; for the second time, I take refuge in the Sangha ;
for the third time, I take refuge in the Buddha ; for the third time, I take refuge in the Dharma ; for the third time, I take refuge in the Sangha” [11]

d) Complete Extinction

48§ After teaching the Dharma for forty-five years and regulating life within the monastic community, the Buddha attained complete Nirvana at the age of eighty in Kushinagar. Buddhist artists depict him lying on his right side between two trees, with his head to the east and his feet to the west.

49§ The ashes from his cremation were collected to be venerated in burial mounds serving as reliquaries – stupas. Upon reaching China, these mounds evolved into multi-storey towers known as ‘pagodas'.

50§ Buddhists practise circumambulation around these sacred monuments, keeping them on their right-hand side. In Thailand, they are incorporated into a network of white cotton threads linking them to statues of the Buddha Sakyamuni and other sacred objects, thus forming a sort of sacred energy circuit.

51§ Alongside the veneration of relics, the monks are said to have gathered at the ‘council' of Rajagriha to codify the Master's teachings in the ‘Three Baskets' : the Basket of monastic rules, the Basket of the sayings of the Buddha and his great disciples, and finally, probably at a later date, the Basket of metaphysical treatises. Historians debate the historical reality of this council.

e) The spread of Buddhism in Asia

52§ Buddhism spread throughout Sinicised Asia and Indianised Asia, where it took deep root. In India, however, it declined. The first emperor to have unified a large part of India, Emperor Ashoka (273–232), had nevertheless converted to Buddhism and promoted it throughout his empire, as evidenced by the stupas at Sarnath and Sanchi, built during his reign.

53§ The Gupta dynasty (between the fourth and sixth centuries) supported both Buddhism and Hinduism. Buddhist art flourished under their rule in Mathura, whilst King Kumararagupta I (415–455) endowed the Buddhist university at Nalanda, which was to become a renowned centre of Buddhist learning.

55§ The three traditions – the Way of the Ancients, the Great Vehicle and the Tantric Vehicle – recount the life of Sakyamuni Buddha following the same narrative framework, but they differ in their interpretation, particularly regarding the reality of Sakyamuni Buddha's passing :
The Way of the Ancients holds that Shakyamuni Buddha is no longer present for anyone ; the two jewels of the Dharma and the monastic community make up for his passing ;
the Mahayana, followed in this by the Tantric Vehicle, holds that Sakyamuni Buddha feigned his passing in order to provoke a salutary jolt in his disciples, as maintained in one of his most influential writings, the Lotus Sutra ; in reality, Sakyamuni Buddha is still present and active.

56§ These differences in interpretation reflect differing views on the significance of the figure of the Buddha, as we shall see.

釈迦牟尼仏の生涯（続き・完結）

警告。決して軽視できない姿勢
他の宗教と向き合うというこの行為は決して些細なことではなく、そのような出会いにおいて何が懸かっているのかを自覚しなければならない。宗教とは、信者にとって不可欠とまではいかなくとも重要なものである。したがって、単純化や過度な簡略化を伴う考えでそれに接し、まるで気ままな観光客のように振る舞ってはならない。そのような出会いに必要なのは謙虚さだ――屈辱ではない。また、この姿勢には、自らの信仰、すなわち自分が何を信じているかを十分に自覚することが求められると私は考えている。そうでなければ、それぞれに内部的な整合性を持ち、必ずしも互いに相容れない「全体的な」意味の提案の渦中で、自分を見失う危険がある。 [14]

a) 三毒の教義

33§ 三毒とは、行為の種を蒔き、それらが来世における善悪の存有状態において実を結ぶようにするものを指す：

第一の毒は貪欲、すなわち何かや誰かを所有し、手に入れようとする欲望である。「これやあれを手に入れなければならない。そうすれば私は幸せになれる」――そしてこれを達成するために、人は嘘をついたり、盗んだり、殺したりする誘惑に駆られる；
第二の毒は、憎しみ、恐怖、嫉妬、そして否定的な感情を包含する。これらは第一の毒とは異なり、私たちを拒絶し、遠ざけようとする。「この物やこの人を私から遠ざけろ。それが私に苦しみをもたらすからだ」。こうした感情は、嘘をつき、盗み、殺すように私たちを駆り立てる；
三つ目にして最後の毒は、感情的なものではなく知的な性質のものだ。それは、魂や「自我」に対する誤った信念であり、実際には実質的な実在を持たない。なぜなら、それは不安定で一時的な異質な要素の集合体だからである [15]。この誤った信念に基づき、貪りと怒りという三毒は、「私」が自分の幸福を得て自分の不幸を避けるために何をすべきかという欲望を通じて、心を蝕む。それは、「私、私、そしてさらに私」という思考である。

34§ 仏陀は三毒の根源を断ち切った。今や仏陀は「業的に」中立な行為を行っている：もはや貪りや怒りに左右されることなく、あらゆる自己中心性を脱した仏の行いは、殺菌された種子に似ており、来世で実を結ぶことはできない。「業」の資本は補充されなくなり、釈迦牟尼仏のこの現世、すなわち最後の生涯において清算されることになる。

b) 四聖諦の教義

35§ 四聖諦の教義は、三毒の教義を別の角度から再考するものである。

36§ 我々はすでに、この世界を構成するすべてのものは「苦」であるとする第一聖諦に触れた。

37§ 第二の聖なる真理は、「渇愛」こそが苦しみの根本原因であると主張する。それは、感覚的な快楽への渇愛であり、これらの快楽を得るために存在したいという渇愛である。また、存在しているという感覚そのものが快楽の源であるため、存在したいという渇愛でもある。さらに、もはや快楽を体験できなくなったと感じるために存在したくないという渇愛――これは否定的な渇愛であるが、その裏には、快楽への強烈な渇望が潜んでいる。

38§ 第三の聖なる真理は、「苦」を終わらせることができると約束している――渇の火を消し去ることによって。この消滅は、サンスクリット語でニルヴァーナと呼ばれる。ろうそくは、蝋が尽きて炎が消えるとき、ニルヴァーナに達する。蝋は情欲を表し、炎は渇を表している。

c) 僧団の創設

42§ 仏の周囲に比丘の共同体が形成され、それにより仏は、家を出て仏の道を歩むというこの生き方の規則を定めた。

46§ 仏教の信者は、「三宝に帰依する」という文言を唱える。『古人の道』では、次のように述べられている。

d) 完全な消滅

48§ 45年間にわたり法（ダルマ）を説き、僧団の生活を整えた後、仏陀は80歳の時にクシナガルで完全な涅槃（ニルヴァーナ）に入った。仏教の芸術家たちは、仏陀が2本の木の間に右側を下にして横たわり、頭を東に向け、足を西に向けている姿を表現している。

49§ 火葬後の遺灰は集められ、遺骨を納める墳墓――ストゥーパ――として崇敬された。中国に伝来すると、これらの墳墓は「パゴダ」と呼ばれる多層の塔へと発展した。

55§ 「古の道」、「大乗」、「密教」という三つの伝統は、同じ物語の枠組みに従って釈迦牟尼仏の生涯を語っているが、特に釈迦牟尼仏の入滅の現実性に関して、その解釈が異なっている：
古道は、釈尊はもはや誰の眼前にも存在しないと主張する。法と僧団という二つの宝が、釈尊の入滅を補うものである；
大乗（これに従って密教も同様）は、最も影響力のある経典の一つである法華経で述べられているように、釈迦牟尼仏は弟子たちに有益な衝撃を与えるために入滅を装ったと主張する。実際には、釈迦牟尼仏は今も存在し、活動している。

56§ こうした解釈の違いは、後で見るように、仏という存在の意義に関する見解の相違を反映している。

La vie du Bouddha Sakyamuni

Préambule

Précision de vocabulaire

1§ Le fondateur de la bouddhologie, le français Eugène Burnouf (1801-1852), a distingué l'adjectif « bouddhiste » pour les personnes et l'adjectif « bouddhique » pour les choses. Nous ne reprenons pas cette distinction sans réelle valeur ajoutée.

2§ Le bouddhisme est apparu en Inde avant de se répandre en Asie sous la forme de trois grands courants : la Voie des Anciens, le Grand Véhicule et le Véhicule Tantrique.

Le Grand Véhicule représente le courant bouddhiste le plus important en nombre, avec 56 % du nombre total de bouddhistes en Asie. Vient ensuite la Voie des Anciens (38%) suivi du Véhicule Tantrique (6%) [3].

3§ Nous retracerons l'histoire de leur référence commune, le Bouddha Sakyamuni, avant de les étudier successivement.

1. L'histoire fondatrice du Bouddha Sakyamuni

4§ Le bouddhisme est apparu en Inde vers 500 avant Jésus-Christ avec celui qu'on appelle le Bouddha Sakyamuni, littéralement « l'Éveillé Sage-[du-clan]-des-Sakya ».

5§ Le Bouddha a apporté une réponse personnelle à la question existentielle qui agitait le brahmanisme : comment libérer l'âme, le Soi, de l'esclavage de la roue des renaissances qui fait renaître sans fin les êtres dans les six destinées : êtres célestes, humains, animaux, esprits affamés, esprits belliqueux, ou condamnés dans les enfers sous terre.

6§ La cosmogonie bouddhiste répartit ces six formes d'existence dans un triple monde :

le monde du désir où se retrouvent les six destinées, des enfers jusqu'aux domaines célestes ;
le monde de la forme, accessible seulement aux êtres célestes, où les êtres sont constitués de matière subtile ;
le monde sans forme, constitué des états mentaux les plus élevés sans aucun support corporel.

7§ La réponse du Bouddha Sakyamuni sort du cadre de la religiosité classique hindoue, dans la mesure où pour lui il n'y a pas d'âme comme nous allons le voir.

8§ Les bouddhistes racontent la vie du Bouddha Sakyamuni en quatre évènements extraordinaires situés dans le royaume du Maghada, au nord-est de l'Inde :

la naissance à Lumbini ;
l'Éveil à l'âge de trente-cinq ans à Bodh Gaya ;
la première prédication au Parc des Gazelles à Sarnath et enfin
sa mort – son Extinction définitive - à quatre-vingts ans à Kushinagar.

a) De la naissance à la sortie de la caste

9§ Être céleste dans son avant-dernière existence, le futur Siddharta Gautama choisit de naître dans le clan des Sakya, de la caste des gouvernants : la reine voit en rêve un éléphant lui toucher le flanc de sa trompe et le lendemain elle se retrouve enceinte.

10§ L'accouchement se passe lui aussi de manière extraordinaire : alors qu'elle se promène dans le parc de Lumbini, la reine, fatiguée, s'appuie à la branche d'un arbre. Siddharta sort à ce moment de son flanc ; déposé à terre, il se met à marcher et prononce la phrase suivante : « Ceci est ma dernière existence, je suis né pour le bien des êtres ».

11§ Marié à 15 ans, il engendre un fils nommé Rahula, « entrave », « lien ».

12§ Siddharta mène une vie dorée où lui sont épargnés les spectacles désagréables. Ce cocon confortable se déchirera à la suite de quatre rencontres en dehors du palais.

Ce qu'il verra à vingt-neuf ans l'amènera à une rupture décisive.

13§ À la première sortie, il rencontre un homme à la démarche hésitante, appuyé sur une canne. Les yeux de cet homme sont ternes, sa peau est grise, ridée, ses cheveux rares sont de couleur grise, de sa bouche édentée coule un filet de salive tandis qu'une goutte de morve pend à son nez. Quand il parle, ses propos manquent de cohérence, ses gestes sont mal assurés et ses mains tremblent.

14§ Siddharta s'inquiète auprès de son cocher : « Qu'a donc cet homme ? ». Et le cocher de répondre : « Ô prince, la force vitale de cet homme est usée, il souffre de la vieillesse ». - Siddharta : « C'est terrible, la vieillesse. Elle concerne seulement cet homme ou d'autres que lui ? ». - Le cocher : « Mais, ô prince, tout ce qui naît doit vieillir, c'est là une loi immuable ».

15§ Siddharta rentre chez lui se coucher sans toucher à son repas : il vient de comprendre que lui aussi vieillira.

16§ Lors de la deuxième sortie, Siddharta rencontre un malade et il découvre que lui aussi tombera malade un jour. Il passe là encore une mauvaise nuit.

17§ La troisième sortie est encore plus déprimante. Siddharta voit une forme humaine couchée sur le sol, inerte : on la touche, elle ne réagit pas, on lui parle, elle ne répond pas. De ses divers orifices sortent des liquides malodorants, des vers sortent de son corps et des mouches se posent en vrombissant sur lui. Un corbeau s'envole à tire d'aile, tenant un œil dans son bec, tandis qu'un chien s'enfuie avec un morceau de cuisse dans la gueule.

18§ « Mais, qu'est-il arrivé à cet homme ? » s'étonne Siddharta . Le cocher lui répond : « Ô prince, sa force vitale l'a quitté et il est mort ». – Siddharta : « C'est terrible, la mort. Elle concerne seulement cet homme ou d'autres que lui ? ». – Le cocher : « Mais enfin, ô prince, tout ce qui naît doit mourir, c'est là une loi inéluctable ».

19§ Siddharta passe à nouveau une mauvaise nuit car il vient de découvrir que lui aussi mourra.

20§ Les trois rencontres illustrent la première des Quatre nobles vérités : la naissance est douleur, la maladie est douleur, la vieillesse est douleur, la mort est douleur – mais aussi ne pas être avec ceux qu'on aime est douleur, être avec ceux que l'on n'aime pas est douleur, ne pas avoir ce que l'on veut est douleur.

21§ La quatrième sortie s'avère plus heureuse. Siddharta rencontre un religieux mendiant qui le surprend par sa sérénité : cet homme totalement démuni semble ne pas craindre la vieillesse, la maladie et la mort, alors que lui, tout prince qu'il est, passe ses nuits dans l'angoisse.

22§ En pleine crise existentielle à vingt-neuf ans, Siddharta décide d'imiter le religieux mendiant en allant sur les routes à la recherche de la Vérité. Quittant subrepticement le palais de nuit, il jette un dernier regard en arrière sur le gynécée endormi : de la bouche entrouverte d'une femme coule un filet de salive, une autre ronfle sans retenue, la jupe d'une autre a glissé, découvrant son sexe, tandis qu'une autre lâche un pet. Face à cette scène, Siddharta a l'impression de voir un champ de cadavres, il est désormais détaché du désir charnel.

23§ Nous avons accumulé à dessein les descriptions peu reluisantes du corps : sans qu'il le sache, le lecteur a pratiqué la méditation bouddhiste de l'« horrible » [4] : il s'agit de visualiser le corps comme un sac ouvert aux deux bouts et rempli d'ordures : peau, poils, dents, os, urine, excréments, morve, salive, bile, sucs gastriques.

b) La marche vers l'Éveil

24§ Siddharta ne trouve sur sa route aucun guide spirituel qui réponde à son attente. Se mettant à son compte, Siddharta entreprend une ascèse rigoureuse au point qu'il rencontre sa colonne vertébrale quand il pose la main sur son ventre. Alors qu'il est sur le point de mourir de faim, il se rend compte qu'il n'a pas réussi à se libérer du cycle des renaissances malgré son ascèse. Par chance, une jeune fille qui passait par là le sauve de la mort en lui offrant de la nourriture.

25§ Siddharta déduira de cette expérience qu'il faut gérer son corps comme une corde de luth : ni trop le tendre sinon il casse, ni trop le détendre sinon il perd son ressort. Le bouddhisme appelle cette recherche permanente de l'équilibre la « voie du milieu » [5].

26§ Revigoré, Siddharta s'assoit en méditation sous un arbre.

27§ Le roi de l'illusion, Mara, craignant pour son empire, survient alors pour l'en déloger. Il lance ses soldats sur Siddharta, mais leurs flèches et leurs lances se transforment en fleurs. Mara envoie alors ses courtisanes distraire Siddharta de sa méditation. « Viens t'amuser avec nous », chantent-elles en dansant autour de lui, mais il reste impassible tandis que leur corps se flétrit au fur et à mesure qu'elles tournent autour de lui.

28§ Mara affronte alors personnellement Siddharta : « Ôte-toi de dessous cet arbre, car la place me revient », affirme-t-il. Et ses subalternes de renchérir.

29§ Siddharta se trouve en mauvaise posture : qui va témoigner en sa faveur ? Surgit soudain de terre un personnage féminin qui prend le parti de Siddharta . Joignant le geste à la parole, le personnage tord son chignon d'où sort un fleuve d'eau qui emporte Mara et sa suite [6].

c) L'Éveil

30§ Plus rien ne s'oppose à la progression de Siddharta et, une certaine nuit, à 35 ans, il réalise l'Éveil, devenant ainsi le Bouddha Sakyamuni, l' « Éveillé Sage-des-Sakya » [7].

31§ L'Éveil s'est produit à la troisième veille de la nuit. Pendant la première veille, Siddharta s'est remémoré l'enchaînement de ses vies antérieures ; pendant la seconde veille, il a étendu ce savoir extraordinaire à tous les êtres, autrement dit il a maîtrisé les arcanes de la loi de l'acte, du karma. Pour autant, ces savoirs extraordinaires ne le constituaient pas encore en Bouddha.

32§ C'est seulement lors de la troisième veille qu'il réalise l'Extinction, le Nirvana, en déracinant le « triple poison du mental » et qu'il devient un Bouddha, un Éveillé.

The Life of Shakyamuni Buddha

Preamble

Vocabulary clarification

1§ The founder of Buddhist studies, the Frenchman Eugène Burnouf (1801–1852), distinguished between the adjective ‘Buddhist', reserved for people, and the adjective ‘Buddhic' ', which refers to things. We do not adopt this cumbersome distinction, which offers no real added value.

Preamble

2§ Buddhism originated in India before spreading throughout Asia in the form of three major traditions : the Ancient Path, the Great Vehicle and the Tantric Vehicle.
The Mahayana is the largest Buddhist tradition in terms of numbers, accounting for 56 per cent of the total number of Buddhists in Asia. Next comes the Theravada (38 per cent), followed by the Vajrayana (6 per cent ) [10].

3§ We shall trace the history of their common figure, the Buddha Sakyamuni, before examining them in turn.

1. The Founding Story of Sakyamuni Buddha

4§ Buddhism emerged in India around 500 BC with the figure known as Sakyamuni Buddha, literally ‘the Enlightened Sage -[of-the-Sakya-clan]-”.

5§ He offered a personal answer to the existential question that preoccupied Brahmanism : how to liberate the soul, the Self, from the bondage of the wheel of rebirth, which causes beings to be reborn endlessly in the six realms : celestial beings, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, war-like spirits, or those condemned to the underworld.

6§ Buddhist cosmogony divides these six forms of existence into a threefold world :

the world of desire, which encompasses the six realms, from the underworlds up to the heavenly realms ;
the world of form, accessible only to celestial beings, where beings are composed of subtle matter ;
the formless world, consisting of the highest mental states without any physical basis.

7§ Sakyamuni Buddha's response falls outside the framework of classical Hindu religiosity, in that, for him, there is no soul, as we shall see.

8§ Buddhists recount the life of the Buddha Sakyamuni through four extraordinary events set in the kingdom of Magadha, in northern -east of India :

his birth in Lumbini ;
his Enlightenment at the age of thirty-five in Bodh Gaya ;
his first sermon in the Deer Park at Sarnath ; and finally
his death – his final Passing – at the age of eighty in Kushinagar.

a From birth to leaving the caste

9§ As a celestial being in his penultimate existence, the future Siddhartha Gautama chose to be born into the Sakya clan, the ruling caste : the queen saw in a dream an elephant touching her side with its trunk, and the next day she found herself pregnant.

10§ The birth itself was also extraordinary : whilst strolling in Lumbini Park, the queen, feeling tired, leaned against the branch of a tree. At that moment, Siddhartha emerged from her side ; set down on the ground, he began to walk and uttered the following words : ‘This is my final existence ; I have been born for the benefit of all beings'.

11§ Married at the age of 15, he fathered a son named Rahula, meaning ‘fetter' or ‘bond'.

12§ Siddhartha led a life of luxury, spared from unpleasant sights. This comfortable cocoon would be shattered following four encounters outside the palace.

What he saw at the age of twenty-nine would lead him to a decisive break.

13§ On his first outing, he meets a man with a faltering gait, leaning on a cane. The man's eyes are dull, his skin is grey and wrinkled, his sparse hair is grey ; a trickle of saliva runs from his toothless mouth whilst a drop of snot hangs from his nose. When he speaks, his words lack coherence, his movements are unsteady and his hands tremble.

14§ Siddhartha asks his coachman anxiously : ‘What is the matter with that man ?' The coachman replies : ‘O Prince, this man's life force is spent ; he is suffering from old age.' – Siddhartha : ‘Old age is a terrible thing. Does it affect only this man, or others besides him ?” – The charioteer : “But, O Prince, everything that is born must grow old ; that is an immutable law.”

15§ Siddhartha returns home to bed without touching his meal : he has just realised that he too will grow old.

16§ During his second outing, Siddhartha encounters a sick person and realises that he too will one day fall ill. Once again, he has a restless night.

17§ The third outing is even more depressing. Siddharta sees a human figure lying motionless on the ground : when touched, it does not react ; when spoken to, it does not reply. Foul-smelling fluids ooze from its various orifices, maggots crawl out of its body and flies land on it with a buzzing sound. A crow flies off at full speed, clutching an eye in its beak, whilst a dog runs off with a chunk of thigh in its mouth.

18§ ‘But what has happened to this man ?' asks Siddhartha in astonishment. The charioteer replies : ‘O Prince, his life force has left him and he is dead.' – Siddhartha : ‘Death is terrible. Does it affect only this man, or others as well ?' – The charioteer : ‘But surely, O Prince, everything that is born must die ; that is an inescapable law.'

19§ Siddhartha has another restless night, for he has just realised that he too will die.

20§ These three encounters illustrate the first of the Four Noble Truths : birth is suffering, illness is suffering, old age is suffering, death is suffering – but also, not being with those one loves is suffering, being with those one does not love is suffering, and not having what one wants is suffering.

21§ The fourth outing turns out to be a happier one. Siddhartha meets a mendicant monk whose serenity surprises him : this man, utterly destitute, seems to fear neither old age, illness nor death, whereas he, a prince though he is, spends his nights in anguish.

22§ In the throes of an existential crisis at the age of twenty-nine, Siddhartha decides to follow the example of the mendicant monk by setting out on the road in search of the Truth. Sneaking out of the palace at night, he casts one last glance back at the sleeping harem : a trickle of saliva runs from the half-open mouth of one woman, another snores unabashedly, a third's skirt has slipped down, exposing her genitals, whilst yet another lets out a fart. Faced with this scene, Siddhartha feels as though he is looking at a field of corpses ; he is now detached from carnal desire.
23§ We have deliberately accumulated these unflattering descriptions of the body : without realising it, the reader has practised the Buddhist meditation on the ‘horrible' [11] : this involves visualising the body as a sack open at both ends and filled with filth : skin, hair, teeth, bones, urine, excrement, snot, saliva, bile and gastric juices.

b) The Path to Enlightenment

24§ Siddhartha finds no spiritual guide along his path who meets his expectations. Setting out on his own, Siddhartha undertakes such rigorous asceticism that he can feel his spine when he places his hand on his stomach. As he is on the verge of starvation, he realises that, despite his asceticism, he has failed to free himself from the cycle of rebirth. Fortunately, a young girl passing by saves him from death by offering him food.

25§ From this experience, Siddhartha concludes that one must treat one's body like a lute string : neither too tight, or it will snap ; nor too loose, or it will lose its spring. Buddhism calls this constant search for balance the ‘Middle Way' [12].

26§ Reinvigorated, Siddhartha sat down to meditate beneath a tree.

27§ Mara, the king of illusion, fearing for his empire, then appears to drive him away. He sends his soldiers against Siddhartha, but their arrows and spears turn into flowers. Mara then sends his courtesans to distract Siddhartha from his meditation. ‘Come and have fun with us ', they sing as they dance around him, but he remains unmoved whilst their bodies wither away as they circle him.

28§ Mara then confronts Siddhartha personally : ‘Move away from beneath that tree, for that place belongs to me,' he declares. And his subordinates echo his words.

29§ Siddhartha finds himself in a difficult position : who will speak in his favour ? Suddenly, a female figure emerges from the ground and takes Siddhartha's side. Backing up her words with action, the figure twists her bun, from which a river of water gushes forth, sweeping away Mara and his retinue [13].

c) The Enlightenment

30§ Nothing now stood in the way of Siddhartha's progress and, one night, at the age of 35, he attained Enlightenment, thus becoming Sakyamuni Buddha, the ‘Enlightened One, Sage of the Sakyas' [14].

31§ Enlightenment occurred during the third watch of the night. During the first watch, Siddhartha recalled the sequence of his past lives ; during the second watch, he extended this extraordinary knowledge to all beings ; in other words, he mastered the mysteries of the law of action, of karma. However, this extraordinary knowledge did not yet make him a Buddha.

32§ It was only during the third watch that he attained Extinction, the Nirvana, by uprooting the ‘three poisons of the mind', and thus became a Buddha, an Awakened One.

1§ 仏教学の創始者であるフランス人のウジェーヌ・ビュルヌフ (1801–1852)は、人に対して用いられる形容詞「Buddhist」と、物事を指す形容詞「Buddhic」とを区別した。我々は、実質的な付加価値をもたらさないこの煩わしい区別を採用しない。

8§ 仏教徒は、インド北東部のマガダ王国を舞台とした四つの非凡な出来事を通じて、釈迦牟尼仏の生涯を語る。

ルンビニでの誕生；
35歳の時にブッダガヤで菩提 (悟り) を開いたこと；
サルナートの鹿野苑での最初の説法；そして最後に
クシナガルでの80歳での死――入滅――。

a 誕生からカーストを離れるまで

9§ 最後から二番目の生において天界の住人であった、後のシッダールタ・ゴータマは、支配階級であるサキャ族に生まれることを選んだ。王妃は夢の中で、象が鼻で自分の脇腹に触れるのを見、翌日、妊娠していることに気づいた。

10§ 誕生そのものもまた並外れたものであった。ルンビニ公園を散策中、王妃は疲れを感じ、木の枝にもたれかかった。その瞬間、シッダールタは彼女の脇腹から現れ、地面に下ろされると歩き出し、次のように語った。「これが私の最後の生である。私はすべての衆生の利益のために生まれたのだ」。

11§ 15歳で結婚し、「束縛」や「絆」を意味するラーフラという名の息子をもうけた。

12§ シッダールタは、不快な光景から隔てられた贅沢な生活を送っていた。この安楽な繭は、宮殿の外での4つの出会いを経て打ち砕かれることになる。

29歳の時に目にした光景が、彼を決定的な転機へと導くことになる。

13§ 初めての外出の際、彼は杖に寄りかかり、よろめくように歩く男に出会う。その男の目はくすみ、肌は灰色でしわだらけ、まばらな髪は白髪交じりだ。歯のない口からはよだれが垂れ、鼻からは鼻水がぶら下がっている。彼が話すとき、言葉は支離滅裂で、動きはふらつき、手は震えていた。

14§ シッダールタは心配そうに御者に尋ねた。「あの男はどうしたのだ？」御者は答えた。「お王子よ、この男の生命力は尽き果てている。彼は老いに苦しんでいるのだ。」 – シッダールタ：「老いとは恐ろしいものだ。この男だけに起こるものなのか、それとも彼以外にも起こるのか？」 – 御者：「しかし、王子よ、生まれたものはすべて老いるものだ。それは不変の法則である。」

15§ シッダールタは食事に手をつけずに家に戻り、寝床についた。彼もまた、いつか老いるのだと悟ったばかりだった。

16§ 二度目の外出の際、シッダールタは病人に遭遇し、自分もいつかは病に倒れるのだと悟る。再び、彼は安らかな夜を過ごせなかった。

17§ 三度目の外出はさらに憂鬱なものだった。シッダールタは、地面に動かずに横たわっている人影を目にした。触れても反応せず、話しかけても返事はない。体中の穴からは悪臭を放つ液体が滲み出し、蛆が体から這い出し、ハエがブーンという音を立ててその上に群がっていた。一羽のカラスが、くちばしに眼球をくわえて全速力で飛び去り、一方、一匹の犬が太ももの肉片を口にくわえて走り去った。

18§「しかし、この男に一体何が起きたのだ？」とシッダールタは驚いて尋ねた。御者は答えた。「お王子よ、彼の生命力は去り、彼は死んだのだ。」 – シッダールタ：「死とは恐ろしいものだ。これはこの男だけに起こるのか、それとも他の人々にも起こるのか？」 – 御者：「しかし、王子よ、生まれたものはすべて死なねばならない。それは避けられない法則なのだ。」

19§ シッダールタはまたも安らかな夜を過ごせなかった。自分もいずれ死ぬのだと悟ったばかりだったからだ。

20§ これら三つの出会いは、四聖諦の第一を如実に示している。すなわち、生は苦であり、病は苦であり、老いは苦であり、死は苦である――しかし同時に、愛する者と離れることも苦であり、愛さない者と共にあることも苦であり、望むものを得られないことも苦である。

21§ 四度目の外出は、より幸せなものであった。シッダールタは、その穏やかさに驚かされる托鉢僧に出会う。この男は、全くの無一文でありながら、老いも病も死も恐れていないように見える。一方、王子である彼は、夜ごとに苦悩に苛まれているのだ。

22§ 29歳の時に存在の危機に直面したシッダールタは、その托鉢僧の例に倣い、真理を求めて旅に出ることを決意した。夜、宮殿からこっそりと抜け出す際、彼は眠る後宮の女たちを最後にもう一度振り返った。ある女は半開きの口からよだれを垂らし、別の女は恥じらいもなくいびきをかき、三番目の女はスカートがずり落ちて性器を露わにし、さらに別の女は屁をこいていた。この光景を目の当たりにし、シッダールタはまるで死体の山を見ているかのような気分になった。彼は今や、肉欲から解き放たれていた。
23§ 我々は意図的に、身体に関するこうした好ましくない描写を積み重ねてきた。読者は気づかぬうちに、仏教の「恐ろしいもの」への瞑想 [18]を実践してきたのだ。これは、身体を両端が開いた袋として視覚化し、その中に皮膚、髪、歯、骨、尿、排泄物、鼻水、唾液、胆汁、胃液といった不浄物が満たされていると想像するものである。

b) 菩提 (悟り) への道

24§ シッダールタは、その道のりで自分の期待に応える精神的指導者を見つけられなかった。独りで旅立ったシッダールタは、腹に手を当てると背骨が感じられるほど過酷な苦行に身を投じた。飢餓の瀬戸際に立たされたとき、彼は、苦行にもかかわらず、輪廻の連鎖から自らを解き放つことに失敗していたことに気づく。幸い、通りかかった一人の少女が彼に食べ物を与え、死の淵から救った。

25§ この経験から、シッダールタは、自分の体をリュートの弦のように扱わなければならないと結論づけた。張りすぎれば切れてしまうし、緩すぎれば弾力を失ってしまうからだ。仏教では、この絶え間ない均衡の探求を「中道」と呼ぶ [19]。

26§ 活力を取り戻したシッダールタは、木の下に座って瞑想を始めた。

27§ 幻想の王マーラは、自らの帝国を危惧し、シッダールタを追い払おうと現れた。マーラは兵士たちをシッダールタに送り込んだが、彼らの矢や槍は花へと変わった。そこでマーラは、シッダールタの瞑想の気をそらすために遊女たちを送り込んだ。「さあ、私たちと一緒に楽しもう」と、彼女たちは彼の周りを踊りながら歌ったが、彼は動じることなく、彼女たちが彼の周りを回るうちに、その体は枯れていった。

28§ そこでマーラは自らシッダールタに立ち向かう。「その木の下から離れよ。その場所は私のものだ」と彼は宣言する。そして部下たちもその言葉を繰り返す。

29§ シッダールタは困難な立場に立たされる。誰が彼を擁護してくれるのだろうか。すると突然、一人の女性の姿が地面から現れ、シッダールタの味方についた。その女性は言葉だけでなく行動でもそれを裏付け、髷をねじると、そこから水の川が噴き出し、マーラとその随員を洗い流した [20]

c) 菩提 (悟り)

30§ もはやシッダールタの歩みを阻むものは何もなく、35歳のある夜、彼は菩提 (悟り) を開き、こうして「菩提 (悟り) を開いた者、サカ族の賢者」である釈迦牟尼仏となった [21].

31§ 菩提 (悟り) は夜の第三更の間に訪れた。第一更の間、シッダールタは自身の過去生の経緯を思い起こし、第二更の間、この非凡な知見をすべての衆生へと広げた。言い換えれば、彼は業の法則、すなわちカルマの奥義を極めたのである。しかし、この非凡な知見だけでは、まだ彼を仏にはしなかった。

32§ 第三の更の間に初めて、彼は「心の三毒」を根絶することで、涅槃、すなわち「滅」を成就し、こうして仏、すなわち覚者となった。
