Chers amis, l’évangile d’aujourd’hui [1] nous rapporte les circonstances sordides de l’exécution de Jean le Baptiste [2]. Rappelons-le, Jean le Baptiste avait reproché à Hérode et Hérodiade leur union illégitime, ce qui lui avait valu son arrestation et maintenant son exécution. J’ai cherché à comprendre comment l’être humain pouvait se mettre dans un tel état et cela m’a fait penser à un enfant qui commet une bêtise. I tried to understand how a human being could get themselves into such a state, and it made me think of a child who does something silly. 人間がどうしてそんな状態に陥るのか理解しようとしたところ、それは子供が悪戯をする様子を思い起こさせた。
Repris par ses parents, il nie farouchement sa culpabilité au point même de s’en auto-persuader : comme l’ont montré les psychologues, l’esprit humain est en effet capable de se mentir à lui-même, y compris en se fabriquant de faux souvenirs. De manière analogue à cet enfant, nous avons peur nous aussi de reconnaître nos torts, parce que nous craignons de perdre l’amour ou du moins l’estime envers nous des autres mais aussi nous avons peur de perdre l’estime et l’amour de nous-mêmes. Like this child, we too are afraid to admit our mistakes, because we fear losing the love or at least the esteem of others, but we are also afraid of losing our own self-esteem and self-love. この子供と同じように、私たちも自分の過ちを認めることを恐れています。なぜなら、他者からの愛情や少なくとも尊敬を失うことを恐れているだけでなく、自分自身への尊敬や愛情を失うことも恐れているからです。
Cette peur nous empêche de reconnaître nos torts, elle nous empêche de demander pardon, elle nous enferme dans le déni et la fuite de ce que nous sommes véritablement, à savoir des êtres imparfaits et faillibles qui ont besoin de nous corriger. This fear prevents us from acknowledging our mistakes, it prevents us from asking for forgiveness, it traps us in denial and escape from who we truly are, namely imperfect and fallible beings who need to correct ourselves. この恐怖は、私たちが自分の過ちを認めることを妨げ、許しを求めることを妨げ、否定と逃避の中に閉じ込めます。つまり、私たちは不完全で過ちを犯す存在であり、自らを正す必要があるという真実から目を背けさせるのです。
Pour sortir de cet enfermement, je dirai que nous avons à apprendre de quel amour nous sommes aimés, l’amour de Dieu cette fois-ci, et non plus celui de nos parents humains. (nous quittons ici le domaine de la psychologie pour entrer dans celui de la religion) To escape this confinement, I would say that we must learn what kind of love we are loved with, the love of God this time, and no longer that of our human parents. We must stand before God and discover what we are called to do : we are called to grow in stature and grace until we reach the stature of his Son in the Kingdom of God, together with all the saints. 私たちは神の御目のもとで立ち、そこに私たちの召命を見出さなければなりません。すなわち、私たちは、すべての聖徒たちとともに、神の御国において御子の姿に至るまで、身長と恵みにおいて成長するよう召されているのです。
Ah ! Si Adam et Êve étaient restés sous le regard de Dieu au lieu de s’enfuir quand il est arrivé dans le jardin. Ah ! s’ils avaient humblement reconnu leur faute au lieu de se défausser l’un sur sa femme, l’autre sur le serpent. Ah ! If only Adam and Eve had remained under God’s gaze instead of fleeing when he arrived in the garden. Ah ! If only they had humbly acknowledged their fault instead of blaming one another, one blaming his wife, the other blaming the serpent. ああ！もしアダムとイブが、神が園に現れた時に逃げ出す代わりに、神の御前に留まっていたなら。ああ！もし彼らが互いに責任を押し付け合う代わりに、謙虚に自らの過ちを認めていたなら。
Notre histoire aurait été différente. Our story would have been different. 私たちの物語は違ったものになっていたでしょう。
Mes amis, chérissons les reproches de Dieu. Ils nous blessent sur le coup, mais d’une bonne blessure qui nous aide à grandir dans l’amour de Dieu, des autres et de nous-mêmes. My friends, let us cherish God’s reproaches. They hurt us at first, but it is a good kind of pain that helps us grow in love for God, for others, and for ourselves. 友よ、神の叱責を大切にしましょう。それはその場では私たちを傷つけますが、それは良い傷であり、神の愛、他者への愛、そして自分自身への愛の中で成長する助けとなるのです。

そのほかにも、「彼はエリヤだ」と言う人もいれば、「昔の預言者のような預言者だ」と言う人もいた。 15 D’autres disaient : « C’est Elie. » D’autres disaient : « C’est un prophète semblable à l’un de nos prophètes. » 15 Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.
ところが、ヘロデはこれを聞いて、「わたしが首をはねたあのヨハネが、生き返ったのだ」と言った。 16 Entendant ces propos, Hérode disait : « Ce Jean que j’ai fait décapiter, c’est lui qui est ressuscité. » 16 But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded : he is risen from the dead.

そこで、ヘロディアはヨハネを恨み、彼を殺そうと思っていたが、できないでいた。 19 Aussi, Hérodiade le haïssait et voulait le faire mourir, mais elle ne le pouvait pas, 19 Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him ; but she could not :
なぜなら、ヘロデが、ヨハネは正しい聖なる人であることを知って、彼を恐れ、保護し、また、その教えを聞いて非常に当惑しながらも、なお喜んで耳を傾けていたからである。 20 car Hérode craignait Jean, sachant que c’était un homme juste et saint, et il le protégeait. Quand il l’avait entendu, il restait fort perplexe ; cependant il l’écoutait volontiers. 20 For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him ; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.
ところが、良い機会が訪れた。ヘロデが、自分の誕生日の祝いに高官や将校、ガリラヤの有力者などを招いて宴会を催すと、 21 Mais un jour propice arriva lorsque Hérode, pour son anniversaire, donna un banquet à ses dignitaires, à ses officiers et aux notables de Galilée. 21 And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee ;
ヘロディアの娘が入って来て踊りをおどり、ヘロデとその客を喜ばせた。そこで、王は少女に、「欲しいものがあれば何でも言いなさい。お前にやろう」と言い、 22 La fille de cette Hérodiade vint exécuter une danse et elle plut à Hérode et à ses convives. Le roi dit à la jeune fille : « Demande-moi ce que tu veux et je te le donnerai. » 22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.
更に、「お前が願うなら、この国の半分でもやろう」と固く誓ったのである。 23 Et il lui fit ce serment : « Tout ce que tu me demanderas, je te le donnerai, serait-ce la moitié de mon royaume. » 23 And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.
少女が座を外して、母親に、「何を願いましょうか」と言うと、母親は、「洗礼者ヨハネの首を」と言った。 24 Elle sortit et dit à sa mère : « Que vais-je demander ? » Celle-ci répondit : « La tête de Jean le Baptiste. » 24 And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask ? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.
早速、少女は大急ぎで王のところに行き、「今すぐに洗礼者ヨハネの首を盆に載せて、いただきとうございます」と願った。 25 En toute hâte, elle rentra auprès du roi et lui demanda : « Je veux que tu me donnes tout de suite sur un plat la tête de Jean le Baptiste. » 25 And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.
王は非常に心を痛めたが、誓ったことではあるし、また客の手前、少女の願いを退けたくなかった。 26 Le roi devint triste, mais, à cause de son serment et des convives, il ne voulut pas lui refuser. 26 And the king was exceeding sorry ; yet for his oath’s sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.
そこで、王は衛兵を遣わし、ヨハネの首を持って来るようにと命じた。衛兵は出て行き、牢の中でヨハネの首をはね、 27 Aussitôt le roi envoya un garde avec l’ordre d’apporter la tête de Jean. Le garde alla le décapiter dans sa prison, 27 And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought : and he went and beheaded him in the prison,
盆に載せて持って来て少女に渡し、少女はそれを母親に渡した。 28 il apporta la tête sur un plat, il la donna à la jeune fille, et la jeune fille la donna à sa mère. 28 And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel : and the damsel gave it to her mother.
ヨハネの弟子たちはこのことを聞き、やって来て、遺体を引き取り、墓に納めた。 29 Quand ils l’eurent appris, les disciples de Jean vinrent prendre son cadavre et le déposèrent dans un tombeau. 29 And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.
