- espérance par rapport à notre vie corporelle, alors que la vieillesse s’installe toujours plus profondément dans nos membres et que nous voyons la mort s’approcher. La foi chrétienne nous fait tenir que, de même que le Christ, en ressuscitant, a vaincu la mort, le croyant lui aussi participera de cette victoire ;
Tout le jour, ils me combattent, ils me harcèlent.

Psalm 1 [8]
1§ The first psalm begins with a beatitude : ‘Blessed’
Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers, but delights in the law of the Lord, and meditates on his law day and night.
2§ For us Christians, we take our delight not in the Torah nor even in what we call the New Testament, but in the very person of Christ, in the law of love taken from the Old Testament but clarified and made achievable in the person of Christ.
In this sense, the Bible serves to help us rediscover the concrete experience of life with Christ that the ‘historical’ disciples of Christ lived.
3§ Blessed, then, is the one who gazes upon the face of Christ, who meditates on how he lived, how he died for us, and how he rose again.
4§ On the other hand, however, just as with the Jew, the Christian is set apart by his religious practice : he cannot ally himself with cynics, with liars, with hypocrites, with exploiters ; he simply cannot. ‘You must not act like one who oppresses the widow, the orphan and the immigrant (the three categories of the poor in the Bible). By exploiting the widow, the orphan and the immigrant, he mocks God and God’s law. You cannot do business with the unjust. ”
5§ Blessed, then, is the one who does God’s will and turns away from everything that offends God’s will.
He is like a tree planted by a stream, which bears fruit in its season and whose leaves never wither.
Whatever he undertakes will succeed ; such is not the fate of the wicked.
6§ You will build something solid by doing God’s will. On the other hand, if you obey your own will, your whims, or fashion, or what godless society says, your edifice will be superficial and will crumble.
7§ The kingdom of the wicked will not last. That of Christ will endure until the end of time and beyond, because this kingdom is deeply rooted.
But the wicked are swept away like chaff blown by the wind. At the judgement, the wicked will not rise, nor will sinners at the gathering of the righteous. The Lord knows the way of the righteous, and the way of the wicked will perish.
8§ The wicked who mock God are those who oppress the lowly, and also those who sneer cynically when spoken to about good and evil. For them, good is whatever benefits them ; evil is whatever prevents them from enjoying themselves. They are people completely self-centred, focused on their own little world, heedless of the little ones beside them.
9§ The righteous person is one who lends, who opens their hand to the poor, one who does not go back on their word : circumstances change and they may lose out on what they have committed to, but they keep their word and do what they have said, even though they stand to lose out.
Judgement as an opportunity
10§ I believe we should rejoice that there will be a judgement in the end, because it means that everything we do matters : the good I do matters, the evil I do matters.
Our lives and our choices matter. Choosing well is important ; it has consequences. Choosing badly is important ; it has consequences. Not only for others, but for me too. There is someone who will say : ‘Here are the consequences’.
11§ That someone is God, and He does not judge in the imperfect, human way. God sees into our hearts ; He knows what our true intentions were. He sees the extent to which we consented to, or conversely resisted, evil. He also sees the extent to which we intended to do good, and whether we succeeded. Or perhaps we did not succeed because, in the meantime, something thwarted me, and I did the opposite of what I intended. But God sees all of this.
12§ God is able to discern the true measure of genuine love in our actions, unlike us, who tend to overestimate or, conversely, underestimate it. And He can also discern the measure of lack of love, of sin, about which we are not necessarily clear. God’s judgement will therefore be just and good.
13§ I believe it is a blessing for the wicked to know that there is someone who will judge me fairly and indisputably on the good and evil I have done. They have the opportunity to repent, to turn away from their evil tendencies which harm not only others but themselves.
14§ And for the righteous, what bliss awaits them ! I am thinking of the painting in the Louvre Museum (France) entitled ‘The Triumph of Saint Thomas Aquinas [9] ’ (1450–1475) : Christ says to him : ‘Bene scripsisti de me’, ‘You have written well of me’ in Latin. I can easily imagine Christ then adding : ‘Enter into the joy of your master’ [10]
15§ You have spoken well of me ; that is indeed what you have done ; enter into my joy. The greatest happiness : to share in God’s joy.
16§ I think we have all felt a little of this joy that awaits us in Heaven : at some point we did God’s will, and we experienced the confirmation that what we were doing was right : ‘You are on the right path, the path to happiness
’. Such moments satisfy the soul and make it want to continue along the path of Christ that leads to the Father.
The Unhappy Righteous
17§ What is interesting about the Book of Psalms is that it gives voice both to the psalmist’s songs of praise and joy – “I am glad because you have delivered me ; I sing to you in your Temple ; you are so beautiful, so great” – and to his cries of distress – “Help me, I am surrounded by predators ; I am dying”. It has preserved the full range of emotions, from joy to sorrow, through which the psalmist – and, through him, the Jewish people – have passed during their history, punctuated by great trials.
The joy of having such a God
18§ As I say in my sermons, we are fortunate to have a God who has made himself accessible through his Son, who came in the flesh. In him, through his Spirit, we can experience a foretaste of the joy of being in harmony with God’s will.
19§ And it is also in him and through him that God grants us the grace of hope :
- hope concerning our bodily life, even as old age takes ever deeper hold of our limbs and we see death drawing near. The Christian faith leads us to believe that, just as Christ, by rising from the dead, conquered death, so too will the believer share in that victory ;
- hope, furthermore, regarding our spiritual life : even as sins obscure our horizon, and our soul suffers from the wounds it inflicts upon itself and upon others, we can find the source of forgiveness in Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins.
20§ Of course, at the general resurrection, on the Day of Judgement, the evil we have done will cause us to shed tears of bitterness ; yet these will be good tears that will purify us to such an extent that they will give way to tears of joy : joy at being forgiven, joy at being reunited with the members of the human and non-human family, and above all, the joy of being able to move towards God.
21§ And what bliss it is to stand in God’s presence. For our God is beautiful, and in saying this we fall short of the truth, since he is the source of beauty. Our God is good, and in saying this we fall short of the truth, since he is the source of goodness.
22§ Our joy will grow even greater when we hear God say to us :
‘Well done, you have been faithful in a few things ; I will put you in charge of many things [11]’. In other words, the good we shall find in heaven will far exceed—if not infinitely surpass—the good we did on earth, which was already a source of joy.
A personal experience
23§ I shall conclude by recounting how the psalter freed me from an anxiety attack. This happened during an Ignatian retreat I was doing in the summer at the Jesuit spiritual centre of Manresa in Clamart.
24§ I had already been struggling with the two hours of daily prayer for several days. Sitting at my desk, I had the idea of switching off my lamp to appreciate the evening light. Then something happened that I hadn’t anticipated.
25§ The darkness began to cover my hands and then crept up my arms, like an oil slick rising gradually. Except that the gloom was not black ; it was grey, and I could see my limbs fading silently and without any physical sensation into this grey mist.
26§ I felt as though nothingness were gnawing away at me bit by bit, without pain, without a cry, without anything. Without anything.
27§ Panic seized me all at once. I rushed to the light switches to turn on all the lights in the room, but that wasn’t enough to calm me down.
28§ For me, the word of God contains a supernatural power capable of driving out evil and demons, so I grabbed the psalter and turned to the chapter at the end : ‘ In all circumstances’.
29§ This chapter lists the psalms according to key words : ‘justice’, ‘liberation’, ‘work’, ‘renewal’, ‘forgiveness’, ‘longing for God’, ‘hope’, ‘faith’, ‘war’, etc...
30§ The keyword ‘liberation’ directed me to Psalm 55 [12] which I read :
Have mercy on me, O God, for men are attacking me. All day long they fight against me, they harass me. They attack me, they lie in wait for me all day long. But on high, an army fights for me.
On the day I am afraid, I take refuge in you. Nothing frightens me any more than what beings of flesh can do to me.
31§ The psalmist was expressing what I was feeling : yes, like him, I was afraid ; like him, I was surrounded by death.
He had gone through the ordeal ; he had been freed from fear. ‘Nothing in the created order can frighten me. What can mere humans do to me ?’ I wasn’t there yet.
32§ For my part, still trembling, I took a cross that I was holding in my hand, whilst reading and rereading Psalm 55. And then, one sentence finally leapt out at me.
But up above, an army is fighting for me.
That heavenly army was the army of angels. That sentence set me free ; I went to bed at peace.
33§ My friends, the Word of God is truly powerful.

A long time later, the master of those servants returned and called them to account.
The one who had received five talents came forward, presented five more talents and said : ‘Lord, you entrusted me with five talents ; here, I have earned five more.’
His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant ; you have been faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things ; enter into the joy of your lord.’
The one who had received two talents also came forward and said, ‘Lord, you entrusted me with two talents ; here, I have gained two more.’
His master said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant ; you have been faithful over a few things, I will put you in charge of many things ; enter into the joy of your lord.”
